Let the sunshine in!
Help us reduce the carbon footprint of our community building with solar panels!
We want to reduce the carbon footprint of our community building by adding solar panels and a battery energy storage system, and we need your help.
Greener Kirkcaldy is a community-led charity working locally to benefit people and our environment. We would like to see a future where everybody is able to heat their home affordably, eat well, and tread more lightly on our planet. Our community building in Kirkcaldy town centre is open to the public 5 days a week, delivering cooking workshops in the Lang Spoon Community Kitchen, community meals and all sorts of events, volunteer opportunities, employability projects, a Foodbank distribution point and a ‘Community Fridge’ which redistributes good food that would otherwise have gone to waste. It is also the base for Greener Kirkcaldy’s 20 staff and the Cosy Kingdom energy advice service. The building is a hive of activity, with around 1,000 visitors each month.
We deliver projects to meet the needs and aspirations of local people: tackling fuel and food poverty, protecting and enjoying the environment, and bringing the community together. Our building is a resource for everyone in Kirkcaldy, offering a range of activities for people to get involved in. We support over 50 regular volunteers both in our building and at our Community Training Garden at Ravenscraig Walled Garden.
Help us make our building more environmentally friendly!
With solar panels we will be able to:
- Reduce our carbon footprint by 3.7 tonnes a year* – equivalent to planting 61 trees each year!
- Reduce our electricity costs by £1,848 per year*, freeing up more funding for our community work
- Inspire other community buildings to install their own renewable energy systems
- Inspire local households to install renewable energy systems too
* Carbon and cost savings figures are from a Resource Efficient Scotland assessment and report on our building.
Now for the technical part…
We want to make our building more environmentally friendly, and more sustainable, by installing a 20 kW solar PV array on its large flat roof. The solar panels will be connected to a 27 kWh capacity ‘Tesla Powerwall’ battery system and an electric car charging point. ‘Smart’ controls will make sure we make the most of the solar energy generated on site.
The good news
We have already raised almost 90% of the total funding we need to make this happen thanks to grants from The Scottish Government and the National Lottery Community Fund.
