Behind the scenes look at the Lang Toun Larder
Our Media Volunteer Tom explains what goes into setting The Lang Toun Larder in his latest blog.
Greener Kirkcaldy’s Lang Toun Food Larder is glad to welcome back its members to allow them the choice we are so proud to offer. The larder offers a wide range of essential items varying from fresh produce from our gardens and partners alongside that we also offer freezer foods, tinned goods and dried goods and available at our refill stations are such staples such as rice, flour, pasta, tea, coffee and sugar
The larder requires a bit of background setup carried out on Wednesday by an ever-expanding team: Jackie, Amanda, Joan & Tom; although everyone shares responsibilities Amanda helps out where she can before helping out with the community meals, Jackie helps to keep everything (and everyone!) on track and Joan & Tom spend most of the time organising the actual shelves of the larder, deciding what goes where and sorting through the donations kindly given to us. When Joan was asked about the larder she said:
“This is a wonderful way of using food that would otherwise end up in landfill and it’s going to people who appreciate it”
We’ve recently welcomed some new eager people into our midst, one of them is Robert who is happy to be helping out and is quickly becoming a vital part of the Larder team.
When a food item can’t really fit in anywhere else, it finds a home in the ‘Help Yourself’ basket for people to enjoy, from pork scratchings to seafood sauce, there’s no telling what might be in there.
The larder is making it more accessible for people who struggle with food insecurity to be able to make healthier choices at the fraction of the cost.
“Letting me choose what I need, means there’s less food waste and I enjoy what I cook and eat, and it doesn’t affect my diabetes and my food allergies. Also, I find the point system is a fair and easy system to use.” ~ Food Larder patron
Our larder is back up and running for existing members and you can find out more information on the larder here. Hope to see you soon!
