Foodie Heaven at Fairtrade Fortnight
Our Media Volunteer Barbara discusses how you can get involved in Fairtrade Fortnight in her first blog.
Love food? Love cooking? Or just love eating? Why not treat yourself to a free Foodie event, as part of Fairtrade Fortnight 2021?
Fairtrade’s annual festival kicks off on Monday 22nd February. This year’s festival will be slightly different as it will all be online, but there are still a wealth of events and activities to get involved in. And best of all, it’s free!
As well as the usual line-up of talks, workshops and panel discussions, there’s a dedicated virtual Foodie Tent, where food-lovers can sign-up for live truffle-making, a cook-along, or even a virtual wine-tasting session. There’s also storytelling, quizzes, competitions, offers and prizes.
Fairtrade Fortnight has been running since 1995 and every year, groups and organisations come together to create a festival of events aimed at raising public awareness about the people who make the food and other products that we buy in our shops. Fairtrade supports producers through decent wages and working conditions, as well as sustainability.
Fairtrade is a global organisation that supports over 1.7 million farmers and food workers across 73 countries worldwide; championing workers’ rights, improving working conditions, supporting a higher standard of living for food workers and challenging unethical working practices. Fairtrade works with farmers, food workers, businesses and consumers, to promote fairer trading.
The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Choose the World you Want’ and the focus is on climate change, which is a huge challenge facing Fairtrade Producers. Fairtrade supports producers to earn a decent income, to help cope with some of the challenges of climate change. It also supports training for farmers to help them make adjustments, including switching to more sustainable systems of farming, to help cope with climate change.
Fairtrade Fortnight runs from Monday 22nd February until Sunday 7th March and features dozens of activities to suit different age groups, so there should be something for everyone.
There’s also Fairtrade Fortnight for Schools, with resources for teachers, families and pupils and ways to get involved in Fairtrade Fortnight with your school. For more information about Fairtrade Fortnight for Schools, go to https://schools.fairtrade.org.uk/
