Looking back, looking ahead: reflecting on our 2023–28 Strategic Plan
Three years ago, we launched our five-year Strategic Plan, A Greener and Fairer Tomorrow, Starting Today. It set out our vision for Greener Kirkcaldy and the role we want to play in tackling climate change, supporting people through the cost of living crisis and helping build a stronger, more resilient community.
A lot has happened since then.
We’ve grown as an organisation, expanded our services and developed new partnerships. All while responded to changing challenges and opportunities. Together with our staff, volunteers, members, partners and funders, we’ve worked with tens of thousands of people. We’ve helped households save millions of pounds and supported people through fuel poverty and food insecurity. We’ve empowered communities to reduce carbon emissions across Fife. We expanded opportunities for walking and cycling and became more involved in helping shape the future of Kirkcaldy.
The world around us has also changed. Communities continue to face the impacts of the cost-of-living crisis and climate emergency. The political and funding landscape has become increasingly uncertain. At the same time, there are new opportunities around Kirkcaldy’s regeneration and stronger local, regional and national partnerships.
With so much changing, we felt it was the right time to pause and reflect.
Over the past few months, we’ve carried out a review of our current Strategic Plan. More than 150 staff, volunteers and members shared their views, alongside our own reflections on how Greener Kirkcaldy has developed since 2023.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. People continue to value Greener Kirkcaldy as a trusted, welcoming organisation that brings people together while tackling climate change, reducing inequalities and supporting our community. There was strong support for our work on fuel poverty, food, energy, walking and cycling, volunteering and climate action. We were also recognised for our growing role as a community anchor organisation, regional partner and local development trust.
The review also highlighted how much Greener Kirkcaldy has evolved.
Alongside delivering practical projects, we’re increasingly supporting community-led regeneration. We’re developing local, regional and national partnerships, sharing our experience with other organisations and helping shape wider conversations about climate action and community development. New opportunities around regeneration, community ownership and partnership working mean we are now able to make an even greater contribution to our communities.
Because of this, our Board has agreed that, we’ll develop a brand-new five-year strategy for 2027–2032 instead of refreshing our current plan.
Over the coming months, we’ll once again be working with staff, volunteers, members, partners and local people to shape that strategy. We want to make sure Greener Kirkcaldy continues to respond to local needs while building on the opportunities ahead.
