Growing Your Own Fruit and Veg
The best part of my job is meeting people who are passionate about gardening and growing their own fruit and veg. It is a passion that I share and I am always ready to talk about plants!
Our open days are a great way to reach out to the community and invite them in to tell us about their growing projects. In addition, our workshops offer the chance to hone your gardening skills and learn how to achieve more growing successes.
My colleagues will agree with me when I tell you that I love the science of growing, I pour over magazines, books, social media and research papers. This is my way to keep up to date with current practices since finishing my horticultural studies. However, I still like to have fun and I am all for trying new things in the garden even if it means that I have some “failures”.
There is lots of trial and error when starting to grow your own fruit and veg and this can be disheartening at times. We gardeners spend a lot of time and effort planning our crops and doing everything by the book. Yet still; seeds fail to germinate, seedlings die or our crops are decimated by garden pests.
Our next workshop is designed to help you through this phase and, whilst we can’t guarantee that you will have no crop losses, we can help support you with some advice and tips.
We will be:
- Discussing what seedlings can go out at this time of year.
- Looking at directly sowing seeds into a prepared bed.
- Look at a variety of protection techniques and identifying which crops may need this.
- Look at different types of staking and discussing which crops may need support.
- We will discuss different aspects of maintenance including regular and effective watering, feeding and pruning.
I want you to know that there are no silly questions and I am ready to share my knowledge and experience with you.
