Sicilian cuisine is a fusion of Mediterranean flavours influenced by Italy and North Africa. It also includes elements of other cultures of previous inhabitants including Spanish, Arab and Greek influences. This leads to an intriguing mix of flavours and styles of cooking and gives us much to explore!
The island is mostly self-sufficient with a year-round growing season, meaning it grows a large amount of the produce consumed – everything is fresh and local, in season and full of flavour.
Join us for our Taste of Sicily workshop where we will make three authentic dishes and discuss how they can be adapted to include seasonal ingredients.
- Arancini – balls of risotto rice stuffed with mozzarella cheese, coated in breadcrumbs and fried
- Caponata – a delicious stew of aubergines, peppers and tomatoes with a sweet/sour flavour
- Bignolati – stuffed bread with Swiss chard, olive and potato filling
We’ll also demonstrate and taste pesto alla Trapanese made with tomatoes and almonds, foods local to Sicily.
Our workshops are fun and informal, our tutor will support you to prepare the recipes, we’ll chat and answer questions as we go.
We’ll look at the ingredients and techniques – and basic principles so you can adapt recipes the to include variations. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.
The course is hands-on, making our creations from scratch and there will be time to discuss, taste and compare notes.
The course is suitable for beginners and people with some experience who are interested in trying out something new. Please bring 3 containers to take your creations home.
All recipes are suitable for vegetarians and can be adapted for vegans. Please note wheat and dairy will be used in the workshop, but we can adapt if we are able. If you have any dietary requirements or queries about the ingredients used in the workshop, please let us know when you are booking.
