Garden discoveries – local moth species
Please note: we’ve had to postpone this event due to a lack of moth activity. We’ll readvertise later in the spring when it’s a bit warmer!
Discover the hidden world of garden moths and get a closer look at these beautiful creatures that can often go unnoticed.
Gardens are important places for moths and with a few changes to your outdoor space, you could be helping reduce the decline of our native moths and still have a beautiful garden.
Moths are frequent visitors to our gardens but often go unnoticed as many are active during the evening. They are a key part of our garden ecosystem, pollinating our plants and as a food source for birds and bats.
This morning workshop will introduce you to the many species of local moths and we will discuss what habitat they enjoy, including flowers for nectar and plants for their caterpillars. We will be setting up some equipment the evening before, to attract the moths, ready for an early start to reveal what’s been found during the night.
We’ll give you some ideas that you can then take back home to your own outdoor space inspiring you to plant some moth friendly plants, maybe even leaving a few weeds and untidy areas!
The workshop will be led by our garden staff along with an expert ecologist helping us identify and discuss the moths we find.
This workshop will take place at Greener Kirkcaldy’s community garden and orchard based within Ravenscraig walled garden. This practical workshop will be outdoors. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather.
If the weather is unsuitable we will let you know and postpone to a future date.
