Did you know that humans have been fermenting food for over nine thousand years? This ancient practice has developed over the years. Today it can be used to reduce the risk of diseases and enhance your digestive system. This workshop will introduce you to making nourishing and seasonal ferments that are great for your gut.
You will…
- Explore how fermentation works with a mix of discussion and practical hands-on activities.
- Learn how to introduce fermented foods to your diet in easy and accessible ways.
- Taste fermented foods and discuss the benefits for our health and wellbeing, this will include seasonal kraut and kimchi.
- Make kimchi, sauerkraut and a seasonal veg ferment to take away, along with recipes and suggestions so that you can experiment at home.
This workshop will be led by Jackie Vural, an enthusiastic cook of many cuisines with a passion for bread making. Jackie has worked with Greener Kirkcaldy for over a decade and loves sharing her skills.
Jayson Byles our Community Chef will support this workshop. With a culinary journey spanning over two decades, Jayson brings a wealth of international kitchen experience. From bustling kitchens to intimate culinary havens, he has honed his craft with a dedication to wild, local, and seasonal ingredients.
All ingredients, equipment, aprons, handouts, recipes and refreshments are included in the price of your ticket.
Alongside expert tuition, you’ll get to taste and take home plenty of delicious food. You’ll have lots of chances to ask questions and learn about making delicious food.
Don’t forget to bring some containers to take your food home with you to enjoy.
This is a hands-on cooking class. Some cooking skills are required to enjoy this workshop, such as basic knife skills.
Vegetarian and vegan alternatives are available. If you have any dietary requirements or allergies, please let us know when you book.
The Lang Spoon Comunity Kitchen
The Lang Spoon Community Kitchen is part of Greener Kirkcaldy’s community building. We’re Based in the heart of Kirkcaldy, close to the High Street and thetrain and bus station. Find out how to get here.
Our purpose built training kitchen has eight workstations, purpose-built to replicate the ease and comfort of of cooking at home.
Our cookery school is complemented by a productive and climate-friendly garden, where we run volunteer training sessions and grow seasonal herbs, fruit and vegetables to use in our classes and events. We also have a larger community training garden and orchard in Dysart.
We host a wide range of events, courses and workshops on all aspects of food and drink. Both our Community Training Kitchen and Production Kitchen are available for hire too.

Accessibility
There are accessible parking bays available outside 8 East Fergus Place. There is a ramp into the building and level access throughout. There is also an accessible toilet. Our kitchen has an adjustable cooking station. This is suitable for those in wheelchairs or who need to sit while cooking.
