Be inspired by stories to help you save energy

In the last three years Greener Kirkcaldy has been helping 1000’s of households to save energy. Since January 2013, with support from the Big Lottery Fund, we, in partnership with STAndEN and CARF, have extended this support Fife wide through the Cosy Kingdom project.

There are many positive and inspiring stories from households that have benefitted from support with saving energy and controlling fuel bills. Here is one example:

Mrs. Farrell lives in Kirkcaldy and requested a home energy advice visit the project following a recommendation from a neighbour.  She is solely dependent on a pension for her income and was spending approx. £829 per year on her electricity.

Her home is heated by a 20 year old storage heating system and due to the high cost of her energy bill was not heating her home to a comfortable level.  Our energy advisor who visited calculated that if she were to heat her home to the 18-21 degrees advised to achieve reasonable comfort levels, she would be spending over 10 per cent of her limited income on energy costs. During the visit the advisor also discovered that Mrs Farrell had significant ongoing health problems which were both restricting her mobility and causing her to be confined to her home a lot of the time.

Our advisor contacted her energy supplier to establish annual usage and give accurate meter readings. As a result of this call we were able to secure the Warm Homs Discount of £140 as well as adding her to their Priority Customer List. This ensures that in the event of a power cut or other power interruption, Mrs Farrell will be prioritised to restore power at the earliest possible opportunity.

A call was also made to Citrus Energy to secure an energy supplier switch which will produce a saving of £201 per year to Mrs Farrell. Combined with the energy efficiency advice given and a referral to our Handy Service for LED bulbs and a thermal door curtain, Mrs Farrell is benefitting from carbon savings and greatly increased comfort levels.
