Lang Toun Cycles celebrates five years serving the Kirkcaldy community

Lang Toun Cycles Community Bike Shop is celebrating five years of serving the Kirkcaldy community from the High Street. The social enterprise, which is now part of Greener Kirkcaldy’s Active Travel Hub, opened in 2020 amid high demand for bikes during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, it has gone on to support thousands of local people to access affordable bikes, learn new skills and travel more sustainably.
Over the last five years, the bike shop’s mechanics have refurbished or repaired almost 4,000 bikes. Many of these were donated by members of the public or collected from local recycling centres and given a new lease of life. This helps to reduce waste and make cycling more affordable. The shop also offers low-cost servicing and repairs, sales of refurbished bikes, a kids’ bike library, e-bike hire and cycle accessories. Collectively, this work has created carbon savings of 64,500kg of carbon dioxide, equivalent to taking 41 cars off the road.
As part of Greener Kirkcaldy’s Active Travel Hub, Lang Toun Cycles also runs bike maintenance workshops, led cycle rides and confidence-building sessions to help people make everyday journeys by bike. In recent years, the team has worked in partnership with local community groups, schools and NHS Fife to support cycling for health, wellbeing and lower-carbon travel.
David Glover, Active Travel Projects Manager, Greener Kirkcaldy said: “Lang Toun Cycles Community Bike Shop plays a key role in our work to help people travel more actively in Kirkcaldy and Fife. Cycling is good for health and wellbeing, good for our community and good for the planet. We’re excited to keep growing and evolving this work in the years ahead.”
“We’re proud of what Lang Toun Cycles has achieved over the last five years. The shop has become a friendly and welcoming space where people feel supported to get around on two wheels. Whether someone wants to learn basic maintenance skills, borrow a bike for their child or make cycling part of their daily routine, we’re here to help.”
Lang Toun Cycles is part of our Active Travel Hub on Kirkcaldy High Street. Open Thursday to Saturday, 10am – 5pm.
