Have you ever wondered why some plants grow well in one part of your garden but not in others, or why your friend in a different part of Fife can grow blueberries without any problem and you really can’t?

Here’s your chance to find out! Success in your garden is often down to working effectively with what you have, which means knowing about your soil and how to work with it.

In this climate friendly garden workshop, we explore the role of soil in any productive garden and highlight the importance of testing your soil before adjusting nutrient levels.

You will be introduced to different types of soil and given an opportunity to test your own, thereby assessing its pH and nutrient value. Healthy soils play an important role in slowing climate change by storing carbon, which is the main component of organic matter.

Healthy plants need healthy soils that are abundant with life. A compost-rich soil has an improved structure, absorbing, retaining and draining water as needed. Adding compost boosts nutrients and feeds the organisms living in the soil.

During the workshop we explore composting from the very basics through to a range of ways of achieving sustainable compost that is rich in organic matter and avoids the use of peat and peat-based products.

The workshop will be led by Dr. Liz Lakin and is made possible through a grant from the Fife Climate Hub Seed and Development fund.
