Ditching Disposables
We are excited to announce that we’re working with Resource Efficient Solutions on a new project this year – Ditching Disposables – funded by Zero Waste Scotland. We’ll be partnering with Fife Pride and Kirkcaldy Parks Half Marathon to reduce waste going to landfill by cutting down on single-use items at their 2020 events.
The pilot project to reduce single-use items at two of Kirkcaldy’s largest events is one of 14 chosen by Zero Waste Scotland in a £1million push to reduce single-use items across the country. Supported by the Scottish Government and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Ditching Disposables scheme will see a range of projects from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, Caithness, Stirling, and East and West Lothian trial alternatives to single-use products.
We’ll be working with Fife Pride 2020 to implement a deposit-return scheme on cups at the event bar. This will divert up to 20,000 single-use plastic cups from landfill. We’re also aiming to replace other single-use plastic items for non-plastic reusable items and we’ll be giving advice on reducing waste to stall holders attending the event and to local businesses. Our learning and resources from Fife Pride will then be passed on to Kirkcaldy Parks Half Marathon to trial at their event in August.
We are very excited to be working on this project and preventing all that waste going to landfill!
Fife Pride will be taking place on 4th July 2020 and Kirkcaldy Parks Half Marathon on the 30th August. If you would like to help with these events as a Greener Kirkcaldy volunteer then please do get in touch by emailing craig@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.
