Get up, out and about this autumn

We’re now officially into autumn. The change in seasons brings a glorious turn in the colour of the leaves, shorter daylight hours and a desire to pull on your favourite cosy jumper. Autumn is the perfect time to start new healthy habits, keep active and connect with nature.
Our Greener Kirkcaldy team have pulled together four top tips for you to get up, out and about this autumn. Read on for more inspiration!
Make every day active journeys
Dropping off the kids at school, heading to work or catching up with a friend or colleague? Choose to make your journeys on foot, or by cycling!
Active journeys help maintain a good level of fitness, support mental health and offer you valuable time to plan, decompress and relax. Did you know that travelling actively helps keep your community cleaner, greener and quieter? Kirkcaldy has a great selection of walking and cycling paths connected to bus and train routes, services and sites of interest!
If you prefer to cycle or want to start, our Active Travel Hub team, based on Kirkcaldy High Street, can help. They’ll support you to find the right bicycle, offer advice on where to start and can set you up with a e-bike loan through Fife Easy E-bikes. If you’re already a seasoned cyclist, the team can also provide bike servicing and repairs. Find out more here.
Connect with nature
Looking for a change of scenery? Appreciate the riot of colours in the trees, bask in “golden hour” sunlight or spot local wildlife getting ready for the winter (including the local squirrels!). Kirkcaldy’s local parks are a short walking or cycling journey from the town centre. Kirkcaldy has some wonderful parks like Beveridge Park, Dunnikier Park and Ravenscraig Park and lots of local woodland to explore! Try free, fun and exciting activities like a colour walk, spot patterns or shapes in nature, or snap photos of wildlife!
If you’re feeling adventurous, why not prepare your garden, raised beds or planters with winter flowers and vegetables? Get in touch with our team to learn more about events, workshops and volunteering sessions which take place regularly at our Greener Kirkcaldy community building on East Fergus Place, or our Ravenscraig Walled Garden. Give back to your community
Did you know we have around 120 active volunteers? Our volunteers support a wide range of projects and activities about climate action, energy, food and growing and travel. There are plenty of exciting volunteering opportunities with Greener Kirkcaldy for you to take part in. You can volunteer at our climate friendly garden or in our Lang Spoon Community Kitchen at our community buidling. How about becoming a Walk Leader, Cycle Ride Leader or Climate Champion?

If you’re limited on time, doing your own micro-volunteering activities with friends, loved ones or a furry companion might be more your thing! Some activities you could try include:
- Do a litter pick on your next nature walk, or organise your own mini beach clean
- Help a friend, colleague or loved one with an errand
- Wipe down information signs and interpretation boards
- Install a bat box, hedgehog home or bug shelter in your garden
- Record local wildlife for a nature organisation or group
Get energy wise and cosy
Brr! It’s getting a bit chilly! Shorter daylight hours and dipping temperatures in autumn brings colder mornings and evenings. Beat the seasons and make your home a cosy haven for winter by taking small steps toward an energy efficient home.
Our expert Cosy Kingdom team can offer free and impartial advice, support, home visits and action plans to help you make positive and confident cost-effective decisions, reduce energy use and lower your household carbon footprint.
And did you know, the team also offer thermal imaging surveys of your home during the winter months? This offer is part of the Climate Action Fife Climate Friendly Homes project and helps to identify areas of heat loss and draughts so you can keep your home toasty warm!
