Beginners Scything Course

Come along and learn to scythe in the Walled Garden at Ravenscaig with experienced scything teacher Rob Brodie. Suitable for complete beginners, the session will take you through the basics of scything – set up, safety, mowing techniques, sharpening, and will briefly touch on maintenance of the scythe and blade.
Scything is an effective and eco-friendly way to manage areas of land, from paths and lawns in back gardens right up to meadows, orchards and crofts. Increasingly popular with environmentally friendly gardeners, smallholders and conservationists, this traditional mowing technique is fossil-fuel free, easy to learn and very satisfying!
Rob is an experienced teacher, having taught hundreds of people on his courses in Scotland over the last 8 years. He also organizes the biennial Scottish Scything Festival and runs an organic gardening business.

Accessibility information
A degree of physical mobility is needed, as the scything is physical and we will be moving around on uneven terrain. Adaptations can be made for particular needs. Please contact us if you need more information
There are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are on gravel or grass. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin.
