DESCRIPTION:For apple and pear trees winter pruning encourages vigorous growth so if you would like more fruit then pruning will encourage new shoots and more flowers. Without cutting back they can become straggly and unproductive. \nBetween November and March the trees are dormant and the lack of leaves means you can better see the structure and shape of your tree. You will learn how to maintain the shape of established trees\, remove dead and diseased wood and reduce crowded growth increasing the vigour of your tree in spring. \nPlease wear suitable gardening clothing and be prepared to be outside in all weathers! SUMMARY:Apple Wassail
DESCRIPTION:Wassailing is an ancient custom that involves drinking cider (or apple juice)\, singing to the trees in the hope of a good harvest and scaring away any evil spirits that might be lurking by making loud noises. \nWe’ll make some drums and shakers and you can bring along any musical instruments (especially drums) so we can make lots of noise and have fun. \nWe’ll be walking around the orchard singing and making noise around the trees then hearing traditional tales of the apple tree from Kate our storyteller.  There will be a fire to gather around and enjoy some mulled cider or apple juice. \nNo need to book just come along! DESCRIPTION:Join us in our community orchard at Ravenscraig Walled Garden for our annual Apple Day! Every year the humble apple is celebrated up and down the country with events dedicated to showing the rich variety of apples that we grow in the UK\, local varieties and their importance to our heritage. \nTake a tour round the orchard\, get your questions answered by our gardeners and enjoy apple themed food and drink such as baked apples\, mulled juice and apple cakes. \nThis year we’ll also have our new apple press in action\, offering people the chance to use our new super fast equipment to try their hand at pressing their own apples in to juice! Suggested donation: £3 per carrier bag of apples. Bring your own apples\, and some empty bottles to take your juice home. We’ll have helpers around to assist with the pressing. \nWe’ll also be branching out this year\, and combining our Apple Day with a Pumpkin Rescue event!! Did you know 15 million pumpkins that are binned every Halloween? Then follow the path around to your right into the main part of the Walled Garden and look left: you will see a green ‘cabin’ and a polytunnel. That is our Training Garden\, where the event is taking place. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk to Ravenscraig Park woods where we will pick the best spot to build a base for watching wildlife! We’ll show you how to build different types of dens\, which we can use to sit and survey the woodland creatures. SUMMARY:Summer Pruning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Our holistic fruit tree care and pruning workshop will introduce you to pruning apple\, pear\, cherry and plum trees\, taking a natural approach. We’ll cover basic techniques and methods to start you pruning with confidence at home. We’ll also look at common pests and diseases\, and how to deal with them organically. The course is based at our orchard in Ravenscraig Walled Garden and covers some theory about pruning but is largely practical and outside\, allowing hands on practice and question time. \nSummer pruning should take place from the end of July\, so this workshop gives you the chance to learn some skills before its time to prune your own trees. \nThe workshop will be led by Appletreeman Andrew Lear\, an expert on growing fruit in the Scottish climate (and a key influence on the development of our Ravenscraig orchard). DESCRIPTION:Join us on a walk from our site at Ravenscraig Walled Garden to Dysart Beach as we go for a coastal adventure. \nProfessional Seaweed Harvester\, Jayson\, of East Neuk Seaweed will teach us how to identify local\, seasonal and edible seaweeds. \nWe will use sustainable harvesting techniques to take some home with us. Jayson will inspire us to explore the possibilities of using seaweeds in our kitchen and garden! \nAt the end we will share a cuppa and discuss ways in which we can help to conserve this valuable resource for the next generation. \nThis is a great chance to take part in a fun and informative morning. \nThe workshop is suitable for over 16’s only and will involve some physical activity over potentially rocky terrain. SUMMARY:Culinary and Medicinal Herbs
DESCRIPTION:Many of our garden herbs such as comfrey\, rosemary and plantain can be used as both food and medicines. \nIn this workshop we will learn about useful native herbs and plants\, and others that can be grown in Fife. We’ll focus on plants and herbs that are medicinal and can also be used in our home cooking. We will help you identify plants that grow wild\, some that can be cultivated at home and discuss how they can be used\, and you’ll plant seeds so you can take away a pot of herbs with you to grow and use at home. \nWe’ll be taking a gentle walk around the garden to identify and collect herbs that grow wild\, and also spending some time discussing the herbs growing in our herb spiral. The tutor for the class will be Simone Melanie from Solar Ripe. \nThere will be a mix of theory and practical hands-on activities\, including walking around the garden. DESCRIPTION:The new green shoots of spring are packed full of vitamins and minerals for us to use bringing a refreshing zing to our cooking after winter.
