DESCRIPTION:Join us at the community garden and orchard in Ravenscraig Walled Garden for our Apple Day. Everyone is welcome! \nYou can enjoy a walk around the gardens and through the orchard to see the fruit trees and maybe even get inspired to plant one at home. \nOur gardeners will be available for any questions. We’ll also have our apple press in action to offer anyone with excess apples the chance to press them in to juice. You can press your own but we’ll have some helpers around to assist. Bring along some empty bottles to take your juice home. \nIf bringing your own apples to be pressed there is a suggested donation of £5 per carrier bag. \nThere will be hot drinks\, mulled apple juice and apple cake. \nThis is an outdoor event so please wear suitable clothing for the weather and conditions. \nAccessibility\nThere is unmarked parking on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will share our knowledge and experience to help you make your own jam.  \nMaking jam is a great way to preserve the summer harvest well into winter. At our community garden in Kirkcaldy\, we grow a variety. We have strawberries\, raspberries\, blueberries\, and apples from the orchard in autumn. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will learn about useful native herbs and plants that can be grown in Fife to make your own herbal teas. We will help you identify herbs that grow wild\, along with herbs that can be cultivated at home and discuss how they can be used. SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardening - Gardening for biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Creating the right habitats in your garden can help wildlife cope with our changing climate. As Fife becomes hotter and dryer in the summer and warmer and wetter in the winter wildlife may need a helping hand to thrive. \nBoosting biodiversity in our gardens will help build resilience in plants and animals. Encouraging a wide range of plants and micro-habitats helps create a mosaic of food sources\, shelter and safe places to live. \nAt the workshop we will learn about the different types of habitat that will encourage wildlife to move in and what you can do to encourage a wide range of species. We’ll also discuss ways to improve your garden to provide food and shelter for different invertebrates\, amphibians\, birds and mammals. \nTo get the best from the workshop please bring along a photograph of a part of your garden or growing space that you would like to improve for wildlife. \nDr Gillian Fyfe is the Lead for Climate Friendly Gardens at Climate Action Fife and will be delivering this workshop. DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be led by Dr Liz Lakin\, a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee and the Academic Lead for the Living Lab at Dundee Botanic Garden. \nHealthy soil is essential to produce the fruit\, cereal and vegetables we eat. Soil also stores carbon by locking in greenhouse gases\, helping to reduce our impact on climate change. \nKnowing about soil and what it needs will help you produce bumper crops and vigorous plants. Learning to use natural improvement methods will save time and money\, plus you will create a healthy habitat for thousands of different species of fungi\, bacteria and invertebrates that in turn support and maintain your soil. \nAt the workshop we will learn about the different types of soil\, why the chemistry of soil is important and do some testing. We’ll also discuss ways to improve your soil and give an overview of the important elements of a healthy soil. \n* To get the best from the workshop please bring along a soil sample from your own garden or an area you use for growing. DESCRIPTION:Bring your cycle along for free checks and minor adjustments and repairs. \nOn the 30th of July\, Lang Toun Cycles will be at Ravenscraig Walled Gardens to run a Dr Bike session at the Greener Kirkcaldy Community Gardens Open Day. Learn more about the open day here. \nAt Dr Bike sessions\, experienced mechanics check everything on your cycle from wheels\, brakes\, gears and tyre pressure to lights\, racks\, pedals\, saddles and more. Any minor adjustments we can make\, we do there and then. DESCRIPTION:At our community garden in Kirkcaldy we grow a variety of fruit\, strawberries\, raspberries and blueberries then apples from the orchard in autumn. There’s always some rhubarb to pick too. Most fruit is easy to grow at home and you can find raspberries and brambles growing wild along paths and hedgerows. \nMaking jam is a great way to preserve the summer harvest to last well into the winter. At the workshop we will share our knowledge and experience to help you make jam from garden and hedgerow fruit. \nWe’ll forage around the garden to pick fruit and wild berries and then turn it into jam. Go through the green gates and follow the path around to your right past the car park. Keep to the right and you will see a big space with lots of allotments. If you look to the left\, you will see a green ‘cabin’ with a polytunnel and raised beds. That is where we meet. If no-one there\, people might be in our old plot – Go past the two flower beds on the left and you will see a green hedge in the left. Our community garden is behind the hedge on the left. It has a big brown shed on it.

DESCRIPTION:As we continue to live during this time of pandemic it can be easy to feel run down and anxious. The good news is that a wide array of plants are at hand to help us through this time. Join Simone Melanie at the Greener Kirkcaldy community garden to learn about how you can use herbs for relaxation and nourishment in this 3 hour workshop.  \nWe will focus on native plants that we can find growing all around us\, and learn how we can use them to support our immune and nervous systems to help keep us in good health. As we take a gentle walk around the garden we will learn to identify and harvest seasonal plants\, and discuss their different uses and benefits. There will also be a practical session where we will make a sleep pillow to take home\, and try some teas and remedies.  \nSimone Melanie has worked with plants for over twenty years\, and has experience growing medicinal plants and making them into remedies\, which she has done from her medicine garden in Fife since 2014. With an uncertain future ahead\, now is the time to start planning some changes to protect your garden and help the environment. \nCome along to Climate Friendly Gardening workshop at our community garden to get some advice and inspiration on: \n• Growing your own fruit and vegetables. \n• Making your own free compost. \n• Creating areas for wildlife\, pollinators and wildflowers. \n• Visit our orchard to see which trees would grow in your garden. \n• Rain – when to collect it and when to protect from it. \nOur community gardeners will be there to show you around our garden and give advice. \nThere will be 1 hour slots throughout the day so you can pick the perfect time for you.  \nNo experience necessary. There’s lots happening in the garden at this time of year and the frosts are gone so it’s safe to sow seeds. Would you like some advice and inspiration? Then visit our Community Garden and Orchard on Saturday afternoon. \nCome along for a look around and see what’s growing\, meet the garden volunteers and we’ll give you some ideas and inspiration to take back home. \nThis month we will be picking a few of the elderflowers that grow in the community garden to make our own cordial. This delicious spring drink is easy to make so come along and join in. Bring a bottle if you want some to take home. \nOur gardening staff and volunteers will be on hand to offer advice and help with any garden. No experience necessary. \nRefreshments will be available. \nThis event is free and no booking is necessary.

SUMMARY:Spring Foraging and Tonic Making (Postponed)
DESCRIPTION:Further to the Government’s recent update on COVID-19\, we have taken the decision to postpone all of our events from now until the 31st May. Full refunds will be given. \nWe are reviewing the situation daily and will give regular updates on future events\, including new dates for postponed events. \nSpring produces an abundance of plant growth and we can gather many of our weeds and wild herbs to use to eat and make herbal remedies from. \nJoin us for a gentle herb walk around Ravenscraig community garden to see what is growing. Learn how to identify common plants\, how we can use them and which can be harvested sustainably. We will try tea made form ‘weeds’\, create and taste a wild salad\, and make a spring tonic that you can take home with you. \nThe tutor for the class will be Simone Melanie from Solar Ripe.There will be a mix of theory and practical hands-on activities\, including walking around the garden. No experience necessary.
