SUMMARY:Coastal Connections - Climate Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the Beach of Dreams sculptures on display at Ravenscraig Walled Gardens – and have your say on Fife coastlines and beaches. \nAs Fife hosts the Beach of Dreams\, a UK-wide coastal arts festival exploring the unique heritage\, cultures\, and futures of our coastlines in the face of the climate emergency – come and join us for ‘Coastal Connections – Climate Conversations’. \nAlongside this Creative Programme\, Fifers are invited to make their local Climate Commitments\, that will become part of a national sculpture\, showcasing the power of community. \nThese are simple\, actionable commitments that people\, groups\, or organisations can make to take care of the coastlines and respond to the climate crisis. These pledges can be as big or small as you desire\, from individual actions to communitywide efforts. \nThis event is twinned with the walk and cycle events on the same day\, this event takes place after the walk and cycle so participants are very welcome to join. Refreshments will be served in the cabin\, all are very welcome. \nThis is a drop-in event. No booking required. \nThis event is part of a series of events taking place along Fife Coastal Path from 17th – 24th May for Beach of Dreams with Fife Coast & Countryside Trust. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \nDirections\nRavenscraig Walled Gardens on Google Maps \nYou can also follow the instructions below. \nThe gates to the garden are located at the Dysart end of Ravenscraig Park\, on the corner of Dysart Road and West Quality Street. You will see the opening into Ravenscraig Park. Just next to this are two green metal gates beside a red brick wall and a sign ‘Ravenscraig Walled Garden’ – this is the entrance to our garden. \nOnce you find your way to the gate\, go through the green gates and follow the path around to your right past the car park. Keep to the right and you will see a big space with lots of allotments. If you look to the left\, you will see a green ‘cabin’ with a polytunnel and raised beds. That is our base for the event.

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens - Introduction to Forest Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Forest gardens are food producing systems which mimic natural woodland\, supporting biodiversity whilst providing an abundant harvest. You don’t need any big trees to get started though! Even small gardens or allotment plots can become food forests. \nThis interactive session will introduce the key ideas behind forest gardening\, and how you can apply them in your own growing space. We will use the garden at Ravenscraig as a live example to look at how the principles can be applied. \nJanice Gibson is a keen gardener with an interest in permaculture. She designed and implemented the forest garden at PLANT in Tayport\, and helps to maintain it. \nThis workshop should be of interest to all gardeners\, from the more seasoned to absolute beginners! \nWe will provide tea/coffee and biscuits\, but there also will be the chance to try homemade herb teas and fruit leathers. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\n\nThere are disabled parking spaces on site. SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – winter fruit tree pruning and care
DESCRIPTION:Pruning your apple and pear trees in winter encourages growth and creates a more productive fruit tree. Without cutting back\, trees can become congested and produce less fruit.  \nBetween November and March\, the trees are dormant\, and the lack of leaves means you can better see the structure and shape of your tree. You will learn how to maintain established trees\, remove dead and diseased wood and reduce crowded growth increasing the vigour of your tree in spring.  \nWe start with some fruit tree basic knowledge then move on to the orchard for some practical skills.  \nWe are excited to have Andrew Lear\, Appletreeman leading the workshop. Andrew is a highly experienced fruit tree expert with wide-ranging expertise. He puts 40 years of horticultural knowledge into practice by teaching and advising orchard groups and owners throughout Scotland and propagating heritage varieties of fruit. \nTaking place at Greener Kirkcaldy’s community garden and orchard based in Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, this workshop is free as part of Climate Action Fife thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. This practical workshop will be mostly outdoors but with some initial theory inside the onsite cabin. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided\, please feel free to bring your own lunch. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather \nGardening gloves are recommended\, please bring a pair with you. Equipment and tools will be provided. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardening - Coffee and Compost
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be led by Dr Liz Lakin\, a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee and the Academic Lead for the Living Lab at Dundee Botanic Garden. \nMaking compost at home is an environmentally-friendly way of dealing with your kitchen and garden waste. We will also look at possible problems and what should and shouldn’t go in to give you the best chance of producing great compost. \nAbout our tutor\, Dr Liz Lakin: Trained originally as a school biology teacher\, Liz continues her teaching and research in biology and environmental science at Dundee. She has a keen interest in all things to do with plants. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. Drinks will be provided. This will be an outdoor event with some shelter so please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather. \nBooking info\nThe event is free but booking is required. \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\nThere is unmarked parking on site. SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardening - Healthy Soil
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be led by Dr Liz Lakin\, a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee and the Academic Lead for the Living Lab at Dundee Botanic Garden. \nHealthy soil is essential to produce the fruit\, cereal and vegetables we eat. Soil also stores carbon by locking in greenhouse gases\, helping to reduce our impact on climate change. \nKnowing about soil and what it needs will help you produce bumper crops and vigorous plants. Learning to use natural improvement methods will save time and money\, plus you will create a healthy habitat for thousands of different species of fungi\, bacteria and invertebrates that in turn support and maintain your soil. \nAt the workshop we will learn about the different types of soil\, why the chemistry of soil is important and do some testing. We’ll also discuss ways to improve your soil and give an overview of the important elements of a healthy soil. \n* To get the best from the workshop please bring along a soil sample from your own garden or an area you use for growing. Place some soil in a medium sized jar\, about 1/3\, then fill up with water and leave to settle. Ideally\, do this 2 weeks before. \nBooking info: \nThe event is free but booking is required. \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility \nThere is unmarked parking on site. SUMMARY:Fruit Tree Pruning and Care
DESCRIPTION:Pruning your apple and pear trees in winter can encourage more growth and create a more productive fruit tree. Without cutting back\, trees can become congested and produce less fruit. \nBetween November and March the trees are dormant and the lack of leaves means you can better see the structure and shape of your tree. You will learn how to maintain established trees\, remove dead and diseased wood and reduce crowded growth increasing the vigour of your tree in spring. \nThe workshop will start with some fruit tree basic knowledge then we will move on to the orchard for some practical skills. \nAndrew Lear will be our mentor for the morning sharing his many years of fruit tree expertise. \nPlease wear suitable outdoor clothing and be prepared to be outside in all weathers! No experience necessary\, suitable for beginners. \nThe workshop will take place at Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, directions will be on the confirmation email. \nBooking Information\nFull price: £25 \nGreener Kirkcaldy members/volunteers: £22.50 \nConcessions*: £20 \n*Students (full time)\, Senior Citizens (65+)\, eligible benefits (Income Support\, Working Tax Credit\, Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance\, Income based Employment and Support Allowance\, Housing Benefit and Universal Credit). Proof of eligibility may be requested when booking\, or on arrival at event. \nIf you have any problems booking\, or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \nAccessibility\nThere is unmarked parking on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. Venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event will usually take place in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways\, let us know if you would have issues getting the the orchard area as we can adapt the workshop to take place in a more accessible area.
