SUMMARY:Orchard Blossom Day picnic
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a picnic under the (hopefully!) blossoming apple trees in our Community Orchard at Ravenscraig Walled Garden. \nBring your own picnic\, to gather with us under our fruit trees in Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, celebrate the natural markers of the spring and coming summer and learn about pollinators. \nWe will have some exciting blossom-based snacks for you to try\, as well as craft activities suitable for all ages. \nWe will provide hot and cold drinks\, as well as some snacks. \nWhilst we have chosen a date when we hope our apple trees will be in full blossom\, you can’t stop the spring! We will celebrate the changing season regardless of the stage of blossom that the trees have reached. \nNo booking required; just drop in on the day! \nBring a blanket to sit on if you have one and your own picnic to eat together under the trees. May can still be chilly so we’d recommend layers! \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event is taking place in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:Pick-up a fruit tree at Orchard Blossom Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Climate Action Fife’s A Fruit Tree for Every Garden in Fife campaign. Pick-up a tree to take away and plant at home in your garden. We will have a limited number of trees so please book to avoid disappointment. We will have a mix of apple\, plum and pear trees but we cannot guarantee which ones will be available on the day. \nYou can also join us at the Orchard Blossom Day picnic from 12pm – 3pm. Bring some lunch and a blanket and celebrate Greener Kirkcaldy’s blossoming orchard. \nPlanting a tree in your garden is one of the best ways to cut your garden’s carbon footprint. Plus\, you will have free\, fresh and delicious fruit in years to come. Fruit trees can live for 50-100 years and will provide habitat for wildlife and a beautiful addition to your garden. \nOur staff will be on hand to talk to you about your tree and will make sure you know how to plant it. You can also pick-up a stake\, tree-tie and tree guard to protect your new tree. Leaflets and guidance on how to plant and care for your tree will also be available. \nIf you are able to\, bring a plastic carrier bag or bin liner to take your tree home in. Most of the trees are in pots. You may be given a bare-root tree (not in a pot) if so\, you will need to plant it as soon as possible. If you are given a bare root tree and cannot plant it straight away you will need to have a place to dig it into the soil to keep its roots protected from drying out or frost. \nThis event will take place at Ravenscraig Walled Garden in Kirkcaldy. \nPlease do not book to collect a tree at more than one event or if you received a tree from us in a previous year. \nBooking Information\nThis event is free but booking is required. Donations are welcome to support the Climate Action Fife Community Tree Fund. \nIf you have any trouble booking\, please get in touch with us by calling 01592 458 858 or email social@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk \nAccessibility Information\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Community orchard Wassail
DESCRIPTION:Come down to our Community Garden and Orchard on old twelfth night to celebrate our apple trees and join in a centuries old tradition of wassailing. Wassailing is the custom of visiting orchards and singing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year. \nThis event is family and dog friendly (although some might not enjoy the clattering of pots and pans!) \nYou’ll have the chance to make an evergreen crown to wear then join revellers in a procession up to the orchard\, led by our Wassail queen\, storyteller Mrs Mash. \nGather around the trees and place pieces of toast in its branches to entice robins\, the guardians of the orchard. \nWe will pour cider around the roots of the trees – and make a racket with pots and pans to ward off any evil spirits and wake the trees from their winter sleep. \nJoin in with singing or just listen as we serenade the trees with traditional songs. \nFinally taste the wassail drink\, which is usually a local ale or cider blended with honey and spices. We will have mulled apple juice for all ages to enjoy. \nThis event is free to attend and there is no need to book\, just come along on the day. \nAccessibility information\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – Understanding Soil (soil workshop 1)
DESCRIPTION:Workshop 1 – Understanding Soil \nLook after your soil and you have the foundation of a flourishing garden! Taught by expert Dr Liz Lakin\, this workshop will help you to understand your soil better\, through soil testing\, as well as how to improve its structure\, drainage and nutrient levels using natural solutions. \nHealthy soil is a key part of a climate friendly garden. Soil can slow climate change by storing carbon\, which is the main component of organic matter. \nTo get the most out of this session we will ask you to bring along a small sample of soil from your own garden or growing space. Further instructions will be sent after sign up. \nThis course is suitable for beginner or more experienced gardeners. We will have a break for tea and coffee during the session. \nWhilst these two workshops are designed to complement each other\, you can choose to attend just one as a standalone session \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

DESCRIPTION:Come and see the Beach of Dreams sculptures on display at Ravenscraig Walled Gardens – and have your say on Fife coastlines and beaches. \nAs Fife hosts the Beach of Dreams\, a UK-wide coastal arts festival exploring the unique heritage\, cultures\, and futures of our coastlines in the face of the climate emergency – come and join us for ‘Coastal Connections – Climate Conversations’. \nAlongside this Creative Programme\, Fifers are invited to make their local Climate Commitments\, that will become part of a national sculpture\, showcasing the power of community. \nThese are simple\, actionable commitments that people\, groups\, or organisations can make to take care of the coastlines and respond to the climate crisis. These pledges can be as big or small as you desire\, from individual actions to communitywide efforts. \nThis event is twinned with the walk and cycle events on the same day\, this event takes place after the walk and cycle so participants are very welcome to join. Refreshments will be served in the cabin\, all are very welcome. \nThis is a drop-in event. No booking required. \nThis event is part of a series of events taking place along Fife Coastal Path from 17th – 24th May for Beach of Dreams with Fife Coast & Countryside Trust. \nDirections\nRavenscraig Walled Gardens on Google Maps \nYou can also follow the instructions below. \nThe gates to the garden are located at the Dysart end of Ravenscraig Park\, on the corner of Dysart Road and West Quality Street. You will see the opening into Ravenscraig Park. Just next to this are two green metal gates beside a red brick wall and a sign ‘Ravenscraig Walled Garden’ – this is the entrance to our garden. \nOnce you find your way to the gate\, go through the green gates and follow the path around to your right past the car park. Keep to the right and you will see a big space with lots of allotments. If you look to the left\, you will see a green ‘cabin’ with a polytunnel and raised beds. That is our base for the event.

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens - Introduction to Forest Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Forest gardens are food producing systems which mimic natural woodland\, supporting biodiversity whilst providing an abundant harvest. You don’t need any big trees to get started though! Even small gardens or allotment plots can become food forests. \nThis interactive session will introduce the key ideas behind forest gardening\, and how you can apply them in your own growing space. We will use the garden at Ravenscraig as a live example to look at how the principles can be applied. \nJanice Gibson is a keen gardener with an interest in permaculture. She designed and implemented the forest garden at PLANT in Tayport\, and helps to maintain it. \nThis workshop should be of interest to all gardeners\, from the more seasoned to absolute beginners! \nWe will provide tea/coffee and biscuits\, but there also will be the chance to try homemade herb teas and fruit leathers. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – winter fruit tree pruning and care
DESCRIPTION:Pruning your apple and pear trees in winter encourages growth and creates a more productive fruit tree. Without cutting back\, trees can become congested and produce less fruit.  \nBetween November and March\, the trees are dormant\, and the lack of leaves means you can better see the structure and shape of your tree. You will learn how to maintain established trees\, remove dead and diseased wood and reduce crowded growth increasing the vigour of your tree in spring.  \nWe start with some fruit tree basic knowledge then move on to the orchard for some practical skills.  \nWe are excited to have Andrew Lear\, Appletreeman leading the workshop. Andrew is a highly experienced fruit tree expert with wide-ranging expertise. He puts 40 years of horticultural knowledge into practice by teaching and advising orchard groups and owners throughout Scotland and propagating heritage varieties of fruit. \nTaking place at Greener Kirkcaldy’s community garden and orchard based in Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, this workshop is free as part of Climate Action Fife thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. This practical workshop will be mostly outdoors but with some initial theory inside the onsite cabin. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided\, please feel free to bring your own lunch. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather \nGardening gloves are recommended\, please bring a pair with you. Equipment and tools will be provided. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. SUMMARY:Apple Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the community garden and orchard in Ravenscraig Walled Garden for our Apple Day. Everyone is welcome! \nYou can enjoy a walk around the gardens and through the orchard to see the fruit trees and maybe even get inspired to plant one at home. \nOur gardeners will be available for any questions. We’ll also have our apple press in action to offer anyone with excess apples the chance to press them in to juice. You can press your own but we’ll have some helpers around to assist. Bring along some empty bottles to take your juice home. \nIf bringing your own apples to be pressed there is a suggested donation of £5 per carrier bag. \nThere will be hot drinks\, mulled apple juice and apple cake. \nThis is an outdoor event so please wear suitable clothing for the weather and conditions. \nAccessibility\nThere is unmarked parking on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event will take place in the main growing area which is on the flat with gravel and paved areas but access to the orchard where the apple trees are is less accessible meaning those with pushchairs and wheelchairs may not be able to access this area.
