SUMMARY:Orchard Blossom Day picnic
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a picnic under the (hopefully!) blossoming apple trees in our Community Orchard at Ravenscraig Walled Garden. \nBring your own picnic\, to gather with us under our fruit trees in Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, celebrate the natural markers of the spring and coming summer and learn about pollinators. \nWe will have some exciting blossom-based snacks for you to try\, as well as craft activities suitable for all ages. \nWe will provide hot and cold drinks\, as well as some snacks. \nWhilst we have chosen a date when we hope our apple trees will be in full blossom\, you can’t stop the spring! We will celebrate the changing season regardless of the stage of blossom that the trees have reached. \nNo booking required; just drop in on the day! \nBring a blanket to sit on if you have one and your own picnic to eat together under the trees. May can still be chilly so we’d recommend layers! \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event is taking place in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:Pick-up a fruit tree at Orchard Blossom Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Climate Action Fife’s A Fruit Tree for Every Garden in Fife campaign. Pick-up a tree to take away and plant at home in your garden. We will have a limited number of trees so please book to avoid disappointment. We will have a mix of apple\, plum and pear trees but we cannot guarantee which ones will be available on the day. \nYou can also join us at the Orchard Blossom Day picnic from 12pm – 3pm. Bring some lunch and a blanket and celebrate Greener Kirkcaldy’s blossoming orchard. \nPlanting a tree in your garden is one of the best ways to cut your garden’s carbon footprint. Plus\, you will have free\, fresh and delicious fruit in years to come. Fruit trees can live for 50-100 years and will provide habitat for wildlife and a beautiful addition to your garden. \nOur staff will be on hand to talk to you about your tree and will make sure you know how to plant it. You can also pick-up a stake\, tree-tie and tree guard to protect your new tree. Leaflets and guidance on how to plant and care for your tree will also be available. \nIf you are able to\, bring a plastic carrier bag or bin liner to take your tree home in. Most of the trees are in pots. You may be given a bare-root tree (not in a pot) if so\, you will need to plant it as soon as possible. If you are given a bare root tree and cannot plant it straight away you will need to have a place to dig it into the soil to keep its roots protected from drying out or frost. \nThis event will take place at Ravenscraig Walled Garden in Kirkcaldy. \nPlease do not book to collect a tree at more than one event or if you received a tree from us in a previous year. \nBooking Information\nThis event is free but booking is required. Donations are welcome to support the Climate Action Fife Community Tree Fund. \nIf you have any trouble booking\, please get in touch with us by calling 01592 458 858 or email social@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk \nAccessibility Information\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Soil health and compost workshop with Dr. Liz Lakin
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why some plants grow well in one part of your garden but not in others\, or why your friend in a different part of Fife can grow blueberries without any problem and you really can’t? \nHere’s your chance to find out! Success in your garden is often down to working effectively with what you have\, which means knowing about your soil and how to work with it. \nIn this climate friendly garden workshop\, we explore the role of soil in any productive garden and highlight the importance of testing your soil before adjusting nutrient levels. \nYou will be introduced to different types of soil and given an opportunity to test your own\, thereby assessing its pH and nutrient value. Healthy soils play an important role in slowing climate change by storing carbon\, which is the main component of organic matter. \nHealthy plants need healthy soils that are abundant with life. A compost-rich soil has an improved structure\, absorbing\, retaining and draining water as needed. Adding compost boosts nutrients and feeds the organisms living in the soil. \nDuring the workshop we explore composting from the very basics through to a range of ways of achieving sustainable compost that is rich in organic matter and avoids the use of peat and peat-based products. \nThe workshop will be led by Dr. Liz Lakin and is made possible through a grant from the Fife Climate Hub Seed and Development fund. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking bays available outside 8 East Fergus Place. There is a ramp into the building and level access throughout. There is also an accessible toilet. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Collage book making workshop - Kirkcaldy past\, present\, future
DESCRIPTION:Join us as part of a series of workshops the Lang Toun Partners are hosting to gather the views and ideas of local people in creative ways for Kirkcaldy’s bid for UK Town of Culture 2028. \nThis workshop is led by local artist Vanessa Gibson and uses drawing\, collage\, writing and mixed media to explore Kirkcaldy through time. Learn more about Vanessa and her work at vanessagibson.co.uk \nWe also invite you to join our Community Meal before the event at 5pm. If you would like to join us\, there will be a question in the booking form where you can let us know. \nAbout the workshop\nParticipants will collaborate to create a community artist storybook responding to the town’s past\, present\, and imagined future\, working intuitively rather than technically. The focus is on mark-making\, colour\, textures\, and personal responses. \nThe workshop will include writing/sketching exercises using local images\, maps\, and words to introduce the theme of time and place. We’ll use bold mark-making\, words and mixed media to explore Kirkcaldy as it is now. We’ll then move on to imagine your own future Kirkcaldy. \nThe aim is for each participant to produce a couple of small artworks\, which will contribute to a shared visual exploration of Kirkcaldy across time. The artworks will be laid out together to form a visual timeline which is videoed/photographed. These works will then be presented in the form of a collaborative artist book created by Vanessa Gibson. \nOutcome\nEach participant produces at least three artworks\, gaining confidence in expressive art-making and self expression while contributing to a shared visual exploration of Kirkcaldy across time. Works are laid out together to form a visual timeline which is videoed/photographed. These works will then be presented in the form of a collaborative artist book created by Vanessa Gibson. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is recommended; you can also drop in on the day if you prefer. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. If you plan to drop in on the day but would still like to book in for the 5pm sitting at our Community Meal at 5pm please call 01592 858 458 during our office hours to book. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. SUMMARY:For the love of sourdough
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is an introduction to baking with wild yeast to create sourdough bread and baking. \nOur class is all about getting started with sourdough baking. We’ll discuss the fundamentals of baking with wild yeasts\, we’ll look at the methods of creating a sourdough starter and how to look after it. You’ll use your own starter to create a sourdough cake and we’ll make sourdough pizza for lunch. We’ll also make and taste sourdough fizz\, and discuss recipes for using the discarded starter. \nSourdough making is a slow process to allow the natural yeasts to work so we’ll have plenty of time to discuss\, taste and ask questions. \nOn our informative workshop\, you’ll learn some basic principles that you can then use at home to get started with sourdough baking. \nWe’ll look at the ingredients and techniques – and how to fit sourdough bread making into your life. \nThe course is suitable for beginners.
