SUMMARY:Nature and nurture walks - Ravenscraig Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through Ravenscraig Park\, enjoying the natural beauty as the seasons change. The gentle walk will take in the beautiful park and the coast around Ravenscraig/Dysart. At the end of the walk there will be optional time for chat and coffee at the Harbourmaster’s Cafe in Dysart. \nWe’ll pass near the Ravenscraig Walled Garden so Greener Kirkcaldy garden volunteers are welcome to join us on the way to their volunteering session. \nThese are drop-in walks so there is no need to book\, just come along and meet us! These walks are led by volunteer walk leader Tina. \nAdditional Information\nPlease note that this walk is weather-dependent. In the event of forecast adverse weather\, we will decide whether to go ahead with the walk and announce the cancellation on Facebook \nParticipants should be able to walk 2 miles at a leisurely pace. The route is mostly flat with some steeper sections/steps\, on paths\, tracks and the beach. \nPlease wear appropriate clothes for the weather. \nUnder 16’s must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs please. \nMeet Tina\n \nTina grew up on the west coast of Scotland\, studied at various universities across the UK and had an early career as a Biochemical engineer. She left it all to live on the Isle of Mull and had an idyllic life there as an organic gardener among other things then eventually came back to the mainland to retrain. She graduated in Fine art in 2018 and developed an ecological contemporary art practice.  \nThe regular walks in the park have a light focus on healing from trauma and anxiety. They will be a little bit more mindful and attentive than the usual noisy\, chatty conversational walks. They aim to be nurturing. \n“Walking is a significant component of my contemporary art practice which aims to deepen our connection with the natural world. I have proposed these walks because I feel it is importantly for us to develop a growing relationship with a place and get to know it in all its moods and seasons.”  \nAccessibility Information\nThe route is unsuitable for wheelchairs / pushchairs due to the terrain. There is accessible parking at Ravenscraig Park and public toilets available in the park.

SUMMARY:Together we cycle - Film screening and panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the Together we cycle\, a film looking at the development of cycling culture and infrastructure in the Netherlands and why against all odds\, Dutch people kept on cycling. \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion looking at cycling and Fife\, what is happening to improve cycle infrastructure and what we hope can be achieved in the future. \nPanelists include Councillor Jane Ann Liston and Lucy Jackson\, Sustainability Co-ordinator at Fife College.  \nAbout the film\n\nTogether we cycle – A film by Nieuw & Verbeterd \nThe film Together we cycle investigates the critical events that led to the revival of the Dutch cycling culture. Many people think that cycling in the Netherlands is a natural phenomenon. However\, until the 1970s the development of mobility in the Netherlands followed trends across the globe. The bicycle had had its day\, and the future belonged to the car. The only thing that had to be done was to adapt cities to the influx of cars. \nThen Dutch society took a different turn. Against all odds\, people kept on cycling. \nThere is no easy answer to the question why this happened in the Netherlands. There are many factors\, events and circumstances that worked together\, both socially and policy-wise. In Together we cycle\, key players tell the story of the bumpy road which led to the current state. Where cycling is an obvious choice for most citizens. \nPanel\nLucy Jackson\, Sustainability Co-ordinator\, Fife College\n \nHi\, my name is Lucy. Part of my role involves addressing the barriers that students and staff face commuting to campus\, and promoting/encourage sustainable transport modes. My role actually started off with the Students Association where I was on a one year placement funded by Smarter Choices Smarter Places. I wrote a Transport Strategy and I also managed an e-bike hire scheme where students can borrow an electric bike for £3/week. \nPersonally\, I have always loved cycling as I like to feel the fresh air as I travel at speed\, favourite places include Tentsmuir Forest. The reason why I am passionate about cycling and encouraging others to do the same is because I know how great I feel being on a bike and I believe it is great for mental health and a great way to reduce your environmental impact!  \nCouncillor Jane Ann Liston\nI use the bike for almost all council appointments\, mostly within St Andrews but sometimes all the way to Cupar or to Leuchars for the train and then again from Markinch to Glenrothes. \nWhile cycling for me is a means of transport from A to B rather than a leisure activity\, I do like cycling on the Isle of Arran; in fact\, it was to free myself from the structures of the very limited bus timetable on the island that made me persevere and overcome balance problems in my early 40s to be able to cycle. It’s also a good way to get between Queen Street and Central stations in Glasgow. \nCycling is environmentally friendly and also a way of taking exercise without really trying and which is not redolent of school PE lessons; shortly after I started riding I found I had inadvertently dropped a dress size which was an added bonus. \nWhat is important about providing better infrastructure is that it helps make cycling the easy option\, and that leads more people to choose that transport option. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. There is a ramp into the building and level access throughout. There is also an accessible toilet. Learn more about how to get to us and the accessibility of the building. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:Nature connection walk - Kinghorn Loch
DESCRIPTION:On this walk we’ll take a gentle ramble from the main village in Kinghorn\, up to the Ecology Centre at Kinghorn Loch\, through the woods and along the lochside\, finding places to stop and appreciate the tranquil surroundings using ‘Nature Connection’ activities based on the Japanese concept of Shinrin-Yoku. This is often translated as ‘Forest Bathing’\, but does not involve going into water. It’s about slowing down\, using our senses and experiencing nature in a way that’s proven to help relieve stress and promote wellbeing. \nAll the activities will be in the form of ‘invitations’ – participants are free to opt out or adapt the activities at any time. The walk is all about taking time to enjoy being in nature at our own pace. \nThe cafe at The Ecology Centre will be open for refreshments after the walk. \nPart of our Communities Connected programme. \nAdditional Information\nPlease note that this walk is weather-dependent. In the event of forecast adverse weather\, Greener Kirkcaldy staff will decide whether to go ahead with the walk the day before. We will contact attendees via phone and email if the walk cannot go ahead. \nParticipants should be able to walk 2-3 miles at a leisurely pace. The route is on pavements and tracks\, with some slopes. May be muddy/wet in places. \nPlease wear appropriate clothes for the weather. \nUnder 16’s must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs please. \nIf you want to know more specific information about the route please contact us. You can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \nBooking Instructions\nThe event is free but booking is required. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility information\nThe route is unsuitable for wheelchairs / pushchairs due to the terrain. There is parking available at The Ecology Centre if participants wish to meet the group there (and avoid the steeper parts of the walk from the village) but please let us know if you will be doing this. \nToilets are available at The Ecology Centre.

Features of interest along the way include St Finglassin’s holy well\, Markinch’s Stob Cross and the villages’ churches. It then follows the River Leven and descends through an atmospheric avenue and passes impressive gallops into the outskirts of Leslie. \nThe fast-flowing River Leven turned Leslie into a mill town in the 1800s. There are public transport options at the start point at Lochgelly Rail Station and finish point Markinch Rail Station. \nRoute Information\n\nDistance – long\nHills – hilly. SUMMARY:Fife Pilgrim Way bike ride - Dunfermline to Lochore Meadows
DESCRIPTION:Cycle through Dunfermline then open countryside and head through the village of Kingseat to Loch Fitty and Blairadam Forest. Blairadam Forest was once home to renowned Scottish architect William Adam. He planted woodland and mined for coal across the estate. There is still evidence of this area’s industrial past today. The route passes through the former opencast mining site of St Ninian’s. The American landscape designer and art historian Charles Jencks has created fascinating landscape art on its grassy mounds. \nAn oasis of countryside leads to the charming hamlet of Keltybridge and on to Kelty. Then the path leads to Lochore Meadows Country Park. \nThis ride is part of a series of rides covering most of the Fife Pilgrim Way. It is ideal for people looking to explore Fife off-road. \nIn this series\, we have broken down the long distance into shorter sections. There are public transport options at the start point at Dunfermline Queen Margaret Rail Station and finish point at Lochgelly Rail Station with local bus options also available. \nRoute Information\n\nDistance – long\nHills – hilly. SUMMARY:Nordic walking
DESCRIPTION:Nordic walking has more benefits than walking\, it brings many more muscles into play than ordinary walking – your chest\, arms\, shoulders\, abs and other core muscles are all involved as well as your legs. Nordic walking poles propel you forwards helping you walk faster\, raising your heart rate and expending energy. \nJoin us at our Nordic walking taster session where a qualified instructor will show you the basics of the Nordic walking technique\, preparing you to join future practice walks. Nordic walking poles will be provided. \nUsing the correct technique and poles will help you target all major upper and lower body muscles with every step. This in turn improves posture\, and body tone and speeds up metabolism. It also reduces the strain on the back\, neck and shoulders too. \nPlease wear flexible walking shoes or trainers. Hillwalking and hiking boots are not recommended. Prepare for outdoor weather. Try not to carry a rucksack as it hampers learning. \nYou should have a reasonable level of fitness and be able to walk 1 mile. Regular Nordic walking can improve fitness\, aid balance and increase coordination\, posture and strength. \nThe session will last for 1 hour 30 minutes. \nRemember to also bring your own water and snacks if you feel you need them. \nIf you want to know more specific information about the route please contact us. You can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \nBooking Instructions\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation.
