SUMMARY:For the love of sourdough
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is an introduction to baking with wild yeast to create sourdough bread and baking. \nOur class is all about getting started with sourdough baking. We’ll discuss the fundamentals of baking with wild yeasts\, we’ll look at the methods of creating a sourdough starter and how to look after it. We’ll send you instructions on how to make a starter to bring to the workshop so that we can discuss (but don’t worry we’ll have some pre-made starter for you to use). \nThe workshop is a practical\, hands-on session and we’ll bake a loaf using our sourdough starter. You’ll use your own starter to create a sourdough cake and we’ll make sourdough pizza for lunch. We’ll also make and taste sourdough fizz\, and discuss recipes for using the discarded starter. \nSourdough making is a slow process to allow the natural yeasts to work so we’ll have plenty of time to discuss\, taste and ask questions. \nOn our informative workshop\, you’ll learn some basic principles that you can then use at home to get started with sourdough baking. \nWe’ll look at the ingredients and techniques – and how to fit sourdough bread making into your life. \nThe course is suitable for beginners. Please bring a bag to take home your baking. \nThe Lang Spoon Community Kitchen\nThe Lang Spoon Community Kitchen is part of Greener Kirkcaldy’s community building. SUMMARY:Community orchard Wassail
DESCRIPTION:Come down to our Community Garden and Orchard on old twelfth night to celebrate our apple trees and join in a centuries old tradition of wassailing. Wassailing is the custom of visiting orchards and singing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year. \nThis event is family and dog friendly (although some might not enjoy the clattering of pots and pans!) \nYou’ll have the chance to make an evergreen crown to wear then join revellers in a procession up to the orchard\, led by our Wassail queen\, storyteller Mrs Mash. \nGather around the trees and place pieces of toast in its branches to entice robins\, the guardians of the orchard. \nWe will pour cider around the roots of the trees – and make a racket with pots and pans to ward off any evil spirits and wake the trees from their winter sleep. \nJoin in with singing or just listen as we serenade the trees with traditional songs. \nFinally taste the wassail drink\, which is usually a local ale or cider blended with honey and spices. We will have mulled apple juice for all ages to enjoy. \nThis event is free to attend and there is no need to book\, just come along on the day. \nAccessibility information\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.
