SUMMARY:Summer garden open day
DESCRIPTION:Visit us at the gardens at one of the most vibrant times of year to see what we are growing and learn about the great work that the staff and volunteers do in our community training garden. We are also excited to partner up with Growing Kirkcaldy again on a plant stall where you can take away various plants for a donation.\n\nWe will be on hand to show you our spaces where we grow fruit\, veg and flowers and will be serving a light\, seasonal lunch as part of The Big Lunch. You can also take away kimchi made in our Lang Spoon Community Kitchen and balms made in our community garden.\n\nAs well as tours around our garden and orchard there are other activities to get involved in all linked to nature and green spaces with something for all ages.\n\nLook forward to\n\nGarden games\nProduce tasting\nTake away some kimchi or balm for a donation\nLight lunch & herbal teas\nScavenger hunt\nOrchard tours\nGames and energy advice with Cosy Kingdom\n\n\nThere is no booking required for this event\, just drop by for a visit!\n\nWalk to the event with us!\nLeaving from the Kirkcaldy Heart on the Esplanade at 10:30am. No need to book\, just meet us at the start point! \nJoin us for a sociable stroll linking Kirkcaldy Town Centre and Ravenscraig Walled Garden. We’ll head from the Heart on the Prom\, past an intriguing sundial\, Ravenscraig Castle and the coast and through the beautiful park and woods to our Walled Garden where there will be activities including tours and refreshments. \nThe 1.5-mile walk (one-way only) will take around 45 minutes\, and be on fairly flat\, paved surfaces with some sections of gravel footpath. There are some steps\, which will be by-passed if participants prefer/require a step-free route. Contact us if you need any more information on the walk. \n  \nThis event is part of Fife Climate Festival and we have recieved a small grant from Fife Communities Climate Action Network to support this event. \nThis event is also part of Lang Toun Fest\, taking part across Kirkcaldy this June. www.langtounfest.com and the Eden Communities Big Lunch. \nAccessibility\n\nPlease note that there is a road closure on Dysart Road so if you are travelling by car you may have to follow a short\, local diversion to get to us.  \nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nSome work may be done in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways\, let us know if you would have issues getting the the orchard area as we can adapt the session to take place in a more accessible area. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Pick-up a fruit tree at Orchard Blossom Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Climate Action Fife’s A Fruit Tree for Every Garden in Fife campaign. Pick-up a tree to take away and plant at home in your garden. We will have a limited number of trees so please book to avoid disappointment. We will have a mix of apple\, plum and pear trees but we cannot guarantee which ones will be available on the day. \nYou can also join us at the Orchard Blossom Day picnic from 12pm – 3pm. Bring some lunch and a blanket and celebrate Greener Kirkcaldy’s blossoming orchard. \nPlanting a tree in your garden is one of the best ways to cut your garden’s carbon footprint. Plus\, you will have free\, fresh and delicious fruit in years to come. Fruit trees can live for 50-100 years and will provide habitat for wildlife and a beautiful addition to your garden. \nOur staff will be on hand to talk to you about your tree and will make sure you know how to plant it. You can also pick-up a stake\, tree-tie and tree guard to protect your new tree. Leaflets and guidance on how to plant and care for your tree will also be available. \nIf you are able to\, bring a plastic carrier bag or bin liner to take your tree home in. Most of the trees are in pots. You may be given a bare-root tree (not in a pot) if so\, you will need to plant it as soon as possible. If you are given a bare root tree and cannot plant it straight away you will need to have a place to dig it into the soil to keep its roots protected from drying out or frost. \nThis event will take place at Ravenscraig Walled Garden in Kirkcaldy. \nPlease do not book to collect a tree at more than one event or if you received a tree from us in a previous year. \nBooking Information\nThis event is free but booking is required. Donations are welcome to support the Climate Action Fife Community Tree Fund. \nIf you have any trouble booking\, please get in touch with us by calling 01592 458 858 or email social@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk \nAccessibility Information\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Soil health and compost workshop with Dr. Liz Lakin
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why some plants grow well in one part of your garden but not in others\, or why your friend in a different part of Fife can grow blueberries without any problem and you really can’t? \nHere’s your chance to find out! Success in your garden is often down to working effectively with what you have\, which means knowing about your soil and how to work with it. \nIn this climate friendly garden workshop\, we explore the role of soil in any productive garden and highlight the importance of testing your soil before adjusting nutrient levels. \nYou will be introduced to different types of soil and given an opportunity to test your own\, thereby assessing its pH and nutrient value. Healthy soils play an important role in slowing climate change by storing carbon\, which is the main component of organic matter. \nHealthy plants need healthy soils that are abundant with life. A compost-rich soil has an improved structure\, absorbing\, retaining and draining water as needed. Adding compost boosts nutrients and feeds the organisms living in the soil. \nDuring the workshop we explore composting from the very basics through to a range of ways of achieving sustainable compost that is rich in organic matter and avoids the use of peat and peat-based products. \nThe workshop will be led by Dr. Liz Lakin and is made possible through a grant from the Fife Climate Hub Seed and Development fund. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking bays available outside 8 East Fergus Place. There is a ramp into the building and level access throughout. There is also an accessible toilet. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.
