SUMMARY:Apple Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the community garden and orchard in Ravenscraig Walled Garden for our Apple Day. This is a free event with no need to book\, just pop along! \nThere will be hot drinks\, mulled apple juice and apple cake. \nWhat’s On\n\nApple Pressing*\nDr Bike\nTry an e-bike\nChat to our gardeners\n\n*We’ll also have our apple press in action to offer anyone with excess apples the chance to press them in to juice. You can press your own but we’ll have some helpers around to assist. Bring along some empty bottles to take your juice home. \nYou can enjoy a walk round the gardens and through the orchard to see the fruit trees and maybe even get inspired to plant one at home. Our gardeners will be available for any questions. \nThis is an outdoor event so please wear suitable clothing. \nDirections and Accessibility\nThere is unmarked parking on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin which is accessible to wheelchairs. \nPlease note the orchard area of our gardens is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways. \nThe gates to the garden are located at the Dysart end of Ravenscraig park; on the corner of Dysart Road and West Quality Street. You will see gates entering into Ravenscraig Park. Just past these gates are two green metal gates beside a red brick wall – that is the entrance to Ravenscraig Walled Garden. Go through the green gates and follow the path around to your right past the car park. Keep to the right and you will see a big space with lots of allotments. If you look to the left\, you will see a green ‘cabin’ with a polytunnel and raised beds. That is where we meet. If no-one there\, people might be in our old plot – Go past the two flower beds on the left and you will see a green hedge in the left. Our community garden is behind the hedge on the left. It has a big brown shed on it. \n

SUMMARY:Eating with the Seasons
DESCRIPTION:Eating seasonally means taking advantage of the amazing local fruit and vegetables that are naturally ready to harvest and at their best. In Fife we have an array of produce on our doorstep which we can use. This cuts down on food miles and benefits our planet as well as the local food economy. We’ll be cooking with local and tasty beetroot\, and we’ll be using the first of the season’s cauliflower in two dishes. \nCauliflower – Cauliflowers thrive in Scotland due to our (usually) temperate summers. It can be enjoyed with many different flavours and pairs well with Indian spices. Although cauliflowers come in many colours from yellow to purple\, we’ll be using the traditional creamy white to make a roasted cauliflower curry. \nBeetroot Chutney – Beetroot has a deep earthy flavour that is suggestive of Autumn and a lovely vibrant colour. We’ll use it to make a chutney which is a great way of preserving the foods we harvest now to keep for eating later. \nThis is a hands-on cooking class. All dishes made can be taken away and enjoyed at home. \nThe workshop will be delivered by Samantha Wells of Random Dining. Sam works with Greener Kirkcaldy\, has vast cooking experience\, and she is passionate about creating food and sharing her skills. \nSome cooking skills are required to enjoy this workshop i.e. basic knife skills. SUMMARY:Jam Making

We’ll look at the principles behind jam making\, how you can make the most of different kinds of fruit and we’ll send you home with recipes\, ideas and a jar of tasty jam. \nYour tutor for the morning will be Jackie one of our experienced gardeners who has a passion for growing\, preserving and cooking. \nNo experience necessary\, the workshop is suitable for beginners.
