SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – winter fruit tree pruning and care
DESCRIPTION:Pruning your apple and pear trees in winter encourages growth and creates a more productive fruit tree. Without cutting back\, trees can become congested and produce less fruit.  \nBetween November and March\, the trees are dormant\, and the lack of leaves means you can better see the structure and shape of your tree. You will learn how to maintain established trees\, remove dead and diseased wood and reduce crowded growth increasing the vigour of your tree in spring.  \nWe start with some fruit tree basic knowledge then move on to the orchard for some practical skills.  \nWe are excited to have Andrew Lear\, Appletreeman leading the workshop. Andrew is a highly experienced fruit tree expert with wide-ranging expertise. He puts 40 years of horticultural knowledge into practice by teaching and advising orchard groups and owners throughout Scotland and propagating heritage varieties of fruit. \nTaking place at Greener Kirkcaldy’s community garden and orchard based in Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, this workshop is free as part of Climate Action Fife thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. This practical workshop will be mostly outdoors but with some initial theory inside the onsite cabin. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided\, please feel free to bring your own lunch. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather \nGardening gloves are recommended\, please bring a pair with you. Equipment and tools will be provided. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\n\nThere are disabled parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event will usually take place in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways\, let us know if you would have issues getting the the orchard area as we can adapt the workshop to take place in a more accessible area.

In this 2-part programme of workshops we will look at how we can make more climate-friendly food choices in our daily lives. Join us for our Plate Up for Fife workshop programme where we will focus on two themes: \nWorkshop 1: Reducing our food waste – Thursday 26th September – 6pm – 8pm. We will be talking about common foods that get thrown away and exploring ways to change that. You’ll also be making a dish with leftovers! \nWorkshop 2: Eating locally and seasonally – Thursday 3rd October 6pm-8pm. We’ll be talking about the benefits of eating with the seasons and ways to access local ingredients and you’ll make a dish using seasonal vegetables. \nWe’ll also be discussing ways we can reduce our meat and dairy consumption\, reduce packaging and eat healthily. It’s important to attend both workshops to get the full benefit of the programme. Please do not book if you have attended a Plate Up for Fife Workshop in the past. \nThere will be lots of information to share about the workshop topics to help generate discussion and have fun learning from each other! \nPlate Up for Fife is part of Climate Action Fife – a Fife-wide partnership project\, bringing together individuals\, communities\, local government and businesses to tackle the climate emergency. It is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. This workshop is also part of Fife Climate Festival. \nThis is a hands-on cooking class where you will be touching\, tasting\, and cooking food. Please bring containers so you take the food you make home. \nIf you have any dietary requirements or allergies\, or if you would like to talk about any of the ingredients we will be using in the workshop\, please let us know when you are booking. \nThis event takes place in our Lang Spoon Community Kitchen in Greener Kirkcaldy’s Community Building. Find out how to get here. \nBooking Information\nThis event is free but booking is required. By booking on to this event you are confirming you can attend both workshops. Donations are welcome to support the work Greener Kirkcaldy does in the community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events.
