SUMMARY:Monthly Climate Café: A Simpler Way
DESCRIPTION:Be part of tackling climate change – join us for monthly films\, guest speakers and discussions.\n\n\nThis month we will be hosting an online event: a screening of the 2016 award-winning film\, A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity\, followed by an online discussion. \n\nWhilst we are living in a time of crises – from the climate emergency to the covid pandemic – we also have the opportunity to change the way we live to the benefit of our community and our environment. A Simpler Way follows a community who came together to explore and demonstrate a simpler way to live in response to crises. Throughout the year the group build tiny houses\, plant organic veg gardens\, practice simple living\, and discover the challenges of living in community. \nThe film documents the community’s learning process as well as exploring the global issues we’re facing\, through interviews with some of today’s most interesting speakers on the subjects\, including permaculture co-originator David Holmgren\, filmmaker and activist Helena Norberg-Hodge\, climate change activist David Spratt and many more. \nThis film provides inspiring answers to some of today’s questions: What does living sustainably really mean? What is it we are trying to protect and at what cost?  And what might a responsible\, regenerative and resilient community look like? \n  \n\nhttp://https://vimeo.com/163775375 \n\n  \nBooking Information \nThe film showing and discussion is free but booking is required as places are limited. \nWe’ll send out a joining link to attendees to allow them to join a couple of days before the event. \nIf you have any problems booking\, or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Monthly Climate Cafe: The True Cost of Flying
DESCRIPTION:Be part of tackling climate change – join us for monthly films\, guest speakers and discussions. \nThis month we will be hosting an online event: a screening of the short film The True Cost of Flying followed by an online discussion. \nThe costs of flying seem to become less and less. But does this reflect reality? Or is the true cost of flying a price we will pay later? \nFlying has become so cheap due to a fierce price war and years of government subsidies. As a result\, in the drop of prices passenger numbers have increased dramatically. Due to this flying is under threat of becoming the greatest single source of pollution. After years of delays the electric automobile is finally beginning to become more popular\, but where is the green revolution in the skies? \nBut just as in the days of the Wright brothers’ passionate pioneers are currently experimenting with small airplanes and are already making their first test flights. Their future dream is that one day we will be able to transport much more by air powered by hybrid and electric engines\, with far greater ease\, cleaner\, more quietly and sustainably. They are now still working somewhat secluded on a technological revolution of hybrid and electrically-powered airplanes. For decades surprisingly\, little fundamental innovation has taken place with the big boys Boeing and Airbus in the area of preservation. \nOur post film discussion will include thinking about whether these technologies are realistic and truly the future of flying or are just another example of greenwashing\, how we can persuade people to break their flying habit and will look at what campaigns currently exist to encourage people to holiday at home. \n \nBooking Information \nThe film showing and discussion is free but booking is required as places are limited. \nWe’ll send out a joining link to attendees to allow them to join a couple of days before the event. \nThe video is hosted on YouTube and some of the film has subtitles. \nIf you have any problems booking\, or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Climate Café - December (online event)
DESCRIPTION:Be part of tackling climate change – join us for monthly films\, guest speakers and discussions.\n\n\nThis month we will be hosting an online event: a film showing of the award-winning and inspiring 2016 documentary\, Thank You For The Rain\, followed by an online discussion. \n\n  \nHow did a Kenyan farmer become an international climate activist? \nA compelling\, engaging\, and complex portrait of an environmental activist. African Studies Review\, September 2018. \nSince 2010\, Kisilu\, a smallholder farmer in Kenya\, has used his camera to capture the life of his family\, his village and the impacts of climate change. He has filmed floods\, droughts and storms but also the more human costs – his children are sent home from school when he can’t pay the fees; men are moving to towns in search for jobs; and family tensions rise. Following a storm that destroys his house\, Kisilu starts building a community movement of farmers fighting the impacts of extreme weather and he takes this message of hope all the way to the UN Climate Talks\, in Paris\, COP21.  \n\nCombining stunning cinematography with hand-held\, first-person accounts\, this vividly textured documentary is a moving portrait of resilience on the frontlines of climate change\, and echoes the strength of spirit of its remarkable protagonist. \n\nThank You For The Rain addresses a range of issues linked to climate change\, including climate justice\, urbanization\, gender equality\, education\, access to water\, climate refugees\, and adaptation\, shown through one man’s journey from father and local farmer to community leader and global activist. \n\nhttp://https://vimeo.com/143747529 \n\nThis film is shown in collaboration with Take One Action. The film is in English and Swahili with English subtitles and suitable for age 8+ \n\nWatch at home with us on Wednesday 2nd December\, then join with others in the local community for our live post-film discussion. \n\n  \nBooking Information \nThe film showing and discussion is free but booking is required as places are limited. \nWe’ll send out a joining link to attendees to allow them to join on the day. \nIf you have any problems booking\, or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Putting our town centre stage: Greener Kirkcaldy Annual Gathering and AGM
DESCRIPTION:Our Annual Gathering & AGM is moving online this year! \nContinuing the conversation we started at our Kirkcaldy After Lockdown event in July\, our gathering this year will focus on ‘towns’ – why they’re so important\, and how we can put our town centre stage. \nWe’re thrilled to announce our key speaker for the evening will be Phil Prentice\, Chief Officer of Scotland’s Town Partnership and National Programme Director of Scotland’s Improvement Districts. With 25 years’ economic development experience across the public and private sectors\, Phil’s role as Chief Officer is to drive sustainable change through collaboration and partnership. Phil will talk about why towns are so important\, resilience\, recovery and renewal\, why climate change is going to be a massive driver in town centre regeneration\, how and why communities need to be more involved\, and STP’s national town centre recovery campaign – Scotland Loves Local. \nWe’ll also be joined by Kirkcaldy’s own Cara Forrester\, from the new Community Interest Company\, Love Oor Lang Toun. Love Oor Lang Toun is a collective of local people who want to create a 21st century town centre people will be proud of and want to spend time in. Working in Kirkcaldy since March this year\, they’ve already carried out a range of projects to support\, develop and promote the town centre. Cara will talk about what they’ve done so far\, and what they have planned coming up. \nOur speakers will be followed by a short Q&A and discussion. \nChair of our Board\, Christine May\, will also give an update on Greener Kirkcaldy’s activities and achievements since April 2019 and outline some of our future plans\, including those described in our recent Strategic Plan Review. \nOur gathering will be followed by our AGM\, which will include an election of the Greener Kirkcaldy Management Committee. View our AGM agenda and papers here. \n  \nBooking Information\nThis event is free\, but booking is required as spaces are limited. Our annual gathering is open to anyone\, however only members will be invited to stay and vote in our AGM. Sign up to become a member here. \nThe event will take place on Zoom. Attendees will also be able to take part by phoning in.
