SUMMARY:Climate Action for All
DESCRIPTION:This online workshop is designed for Fife based community groups and community leaders who are not already engaging their communities on climate action\, but who would like to start. \nWe will discuss the impacts of climate change on Fifers\, the action your communities could take and the benefits of doing so\, and will share examples of what is already happening around Fife. \nIf you are reading this and thinking “climate change…that’s not something we talk about” then you are exactly the person we want to speak to! \nClimate change impacts us all\, so why not come and find out what your community could be doing to take action. \nYou do not have to know anything about climate change to take part. These workshops are not about knowing the answers\, but rather about getting a conversation going\, discovering answers and working together to make Fife a greener and fairer place to live. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required as places are limited. \nThe workshop is taking place online. We’ll send out a joining Zoom link the day before the event. \nIf you have any problems booking\, or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email craig@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \nAccessibility\nIf you have any accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Film screening: Not Without Us
DESCRIPTION:Join the Fife Communities Climate Action Network for an in-person screening of the Film Not Without Us. The film shares the experiences of seven grassroots campaigners at COP21. \nNot Without Us is a a rousing documentary immersing viewers in the moving\, personal journeys of seven grassroots campaigners from around the world. The network aims to empower and enable communities to create a low carbon future\, and promote local resilience and well-being. \nThe event will take place at Greener Kirkcaldy’s community building in the heart of Kirkcaldy at 8 East Fergus Place. The building is fully accessible and just a short walk from the bus and railway stations. Car parking on-site is limited to Blue Badge holders only. There is free parking available at Kirkcaldy Train Station. \nWe deliver this event in partnership with Take One Action’s What the COP? Initiative. SUMMARY:Line in the Sand - Seafield Beach\, Kirkcaldy
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Seafield Beach\, Kirkcaldy to demand climate action at our Line in the Sand event at 12 noon on Friday 24th September. \nLine in the Sand is a Fife-wide\, participatory demonstration of the urgent need for action on the climate emergency and a powerful piece of climate art in the run up to the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow. The date has been chosen to coincide with the Global Climate Strike organised by Fridays for the Future\, and will also take place during Climate Fringe Week. \nAttendees will literally form a line in the sand\, running the length of Seafield Beach\, to show their support for urgent climate action. By forming a Line in the Sand participants will also symbolise climate driven rising sea-levels\, which is an increasing threat to many Fife coastal communities. \n \nLine in the Sand creates a time for reflection and call for local action whilst linking into a Fife wide programme of activities aimed at raising the alarm\, creating a wave of personal action and linking to the Global Climate movement. The event is for anyone who is concerned about the climate emergency and who wants to draw attention to the urgent need for action. \nTake Part\nTo take part in Line in the Sand Kirkcaldy\, arrive at Seafield Beach picnic area between 11:45am -12 noon on 24th September (on foot or bike if possible).  Please carry a placard with a climate message should you wish. SUMMARY:Blue Sky Thinking: Fresh ideas to encourage us to fly less
DESCRIPTION:Flying less is a quick way to significantly reduce your carbon footprint\, but it seems that giving up our regular flight for some overseas sunshine is a difficult ask for many of us – even getting the conversation going is a challenge! \nAt this event\, we will hear from two speakers who have been attempting to do just that\, and who are trying to empower individuals and businesses to change the way we holiday and help us overcome our collective addiction to flying. We will hear about their campaigns\, find out how to get involved and learn from their experiences of encouraging others to reduce their air-travel. \nAnna Hughes\, Director of Flight Free UK\, will be sharing her experiences of encouraging individuals to stay grounded for a year by signing their flight free pledge. The organisation began life in February 2019 inspired by the Swedish Flygfritt (flight free) movement\, which asks people to stay grounded for a year in order to reduce their carbon footprint\, re-discover the joys of overland travel\, and begin to shift the social norm away from aviation. \nOur second speaker\, Emma Kemp\, is Campaigns Manager for Possible\, who work across the UK supporting people and groups to do bold\, beautiful things to tackle climate change. She will be sharing the story of their Climate Perks initiative\, which supports climate-conscious employers to offer paid ‘journey days’ to staff who travel on holiday by train\, coach or boat instead of flying – empowering them to act on their values. \nWe will finish with a group discussion on flight reduction\, how to encourage behaviour change and will consider what will happen as Covid-19 travel restrictions are lifted. You will also have a chance to put your questions to our speakers. \nBooking Information \nThe event is free but booking is required as places are limited. \nThe event will take place online\, via Zoom. We’ll send out a joining link the day before the event. \nIf you have any problems booking or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email craig@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk \nAbout our speakers \n \nAnna Hughes is Director of Flight Free UK. Anna has worked in the sustainable transport sector since 2008\, mainly focusing on increasing cycling levels with children and families. A lifelong environmentalist\, she made the decision to stop flying ten years ago and hopes the #FlightFree2021 campaign will inspire others to do the same. \n  \n  \nEmma Kemp is Campaigns Manager at Possible\, climate change charity focusing on positive\, practical action. She has 7+ years experience in the sector\, in 2019 was selected as one of the British Science Association’s ‘New Voices’\, and has previously appeared on Channel 4 News and Sky News. She currently heads up Possible’s Climate Perks initiative\, featured in publications including Harper’s Bazaar\, the Guardian\, and the Financial Times. There are a growing number of Climate Perks certified employers based in sectors ranging from food to finance to digital. \n  \nMain Image: Flower photo created by jannoon028 – www.freepik.com

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Homes
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in having a warmer\, more energy efficient home\, with lower energy and repair costs and a reduced carbon footprint? Are you thinking about switching to an electric vehicle and want to know more about how it could complement home renewables? \nWe are spending more time at home\, and our homes are now doubling up as workplaces and schools\, so it makes sense to manage our energy use effectively. Since a third of our emissions come from heating and powering our homes\, reducing our energy use is good for the planet as well as our purse. \nAt this event\, you’ll hear about: the importance of taking a whole-house approach to cutting your energy usage and improving efficiency; practical and affordable ways to make your home comfortable and healthy; and we are using how tools such as draught testing and thermal imaging to help you make long-lasting reductions in your carbon emissions. \nYou’ll also hear from experts at Home Energy Scotland on a range of improvements to make your home warmer and more energy efficient whilst reducing running costs. Find out which home renewables would best suit you – and the funding available to make these larger changes. You’ll also hear about how the transition to electric vehicles can help you to make the most of any energy you generate at home. Home Energy Scotland will also be sharing how they have recently helped other households become more climate friendly. \nThe event will finish with a question and answer session\, giving you plenty of time to get advice about your own home. \nWe will be using Zoom to host the event. A joining link will be sent out once you have booked your place.

SUMMARY:Monthly Climate Café: A Simpler Way
DESCRIPTION:Be part of tackling climate change – join us for monthly films\, guest speakers and discussions.\n\n\nThis month we will be hosting an online event: a screening of the 2016 award-winning film\, A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity\, followed by an online discussion. \n\nWhilst we are living in a time of crises – from the climate emergency to the covid pandemic – we also have the opportunity to change the way we live to the benefit of our community and our environment. A Simpler Way follows a community who came together to explore and demonstrate a simpler way to live in response to crises. Throughout the year the group build tiny houses\, plant organic veg gardens\, practice simple living\, and discover the challenges of living in community. \nThe film documents the community’s learning process as well as exploring the global issues we’re facing\, through interviews with some of today’s most interesting speakers on the subjects\, including permaculture co-originator David Holmgren\, filmmaker and activist Helena Norberg-Hodge\, climate change activist David Spratt and many more. \nThis film provides inspiring answers to some of today’s questions: What does living sustainably really mean? What is it we are trying to protect and at what cost?  And what might a responsible\, regenerative and resilient community look like? \n  \n\nhttp://https://vimeo.com/163775375 \n\n  \nBooking Information \nThe film showing and discussion is free but booking is required as places are limited. \nWe’ll send out a joining link to attendees to allow them to join a couple of days before the event. \nIf you have any problems booking\, or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Monthly Climate Cafe: The True Cost of Flying
DESCRIPTION:Be part of tackling climate change – join us for monthly films\, guest speakers and discussions. \nThis month we will be hosting an online event: a screening of the short film The True Cost of Flying followed by an online discussion. \nThe costs of flying seem to become less and less. But does this reflect reality? Or is the true cost of flying a price we will pay later? \nFlying has become so cheap due to a fierce price war and years of government subsidies. As a result\, in the drop of prices passenger numbers have increased dramatically. Due to this flying is under threat of becoming the greatest single source of pollution. After years of delays the electric automobile is finally beginning to become more popular\, but where is the green revolution in the skies? \nBut just as in the days of the Wright brothers’ passionate pioneers are currently experimenting with small airplanes and are already making their first test flights. Their future dream is that one day we will be able to transport much more by air powered by hybrid and electric engines\, with far greater ease\, cleaner\, more quietly and sustainably. They are now still working somewhat secluded on a technological revolution of hybrid and electrically-powered airplanes. For decades surprisingly\, little fundamental innovation has taken place with the big boys Boeing and Airbus in the area of preservation. \nOur post film discussion will include thinking about whether these technologies are realistic and truly the future of flying or are just another example of greenwashing\, how we can persuade people to break their flying habit and will look at what campaigns currently exist to encourage people to holiday at home. \n \nBooking Information \nThe film showing and discussion is free but booking is required as places are limited. \nWe’ll send out a joining link to attendees to allow them to join a couple of days before the event. \nThe video is hosted on YouTube and some of the film has subtitles. \nIf you have any problems booking\, or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \n
