SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardening - Coffee and Compost
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be led by Dr Liz Lakin\, a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee and the Academic Lead for the Living Lab at Dundee Botanic Garden. \nMaking compost at home is an environmentally-friendly way of dealing with your kitchen and garden waste. You can easily make an excellent free soil improver\, for your garden or pots\, that you don’t need to transport or buy from the garden centre. \nCome and join us for some fresh coffee or tea\, which we can add to the composter! At the workshop we will discuss what space and equipment you need\, then learn about the different types of materials you can put in to your compost bin to get a perfect mix. \nUsing your own compost helps reduce the need to use shop bought fertilisers\, builds soil health\, and make plants and soils more resilient to drought. \nThere will be a mixture of discussion and activities to ensure you go away inspired and confident to get started. We will also look at possible problems and what should and shouldn’t go in to give you the best chance of producing great compost. \nAbout our tutor\, Dr Liz Lakin: Trained originally as a school biology teacher\, Liz continues her teaching and research in biology and environmental science at Dundee. She has a keen interest in all things to do with plants. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. Drinks will be provided. This will be an outdoor event with some shelter so please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather. \nBooking info\nThe event is free but booking is required. \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\nThere is unmarked parking on site. In this 2-part programme of workshops we will look at how we can make more climate-friendly food choices in our daily lives. Join us for our Plate Up for Fife workshop programme where we will focus on two themes:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 1: Reducing our food waste: -Thursday 23rd March- 6pm – 8pm. We will be talking about common foods that get thrown away and exploring ways to change that. \nYou’ll also be making Potato Gnocchi\, Homemade Pesto from seasonal Spring Greens and a Fruit Crumble using creative toppings (and leftovers)! \nWorkshop 2: Eating locally and seasonally: Thursday 30th March 6pm-8pm. We’ll be talking about the benefits of eating with the seasons and ways to access local ingredients. You’ll make a dish using seasonal vegetables and finish with a rhubarb dessert! \nWe’ll also be talking about ways we can reduce our meat and dairy consumption\, reduce packaging and eat healthily. It’s important to attend both workshops to get the full benefit of the programme. \nThere will be lots of information to share about the workshop topics to help generate discussion and have fun learning from each other! \nPlease bring some containers to take home your food. If you have any dietary requirements or allergies\, please let us know when you are booking. \nPlate Up for Fife is part of Climate Action Fife – a Fife-wide partnership project\, bringing together individuals\, communities\, local government and businesses to tackle the climate emergency. It is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required as places are limited. SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardening - Healthy Soil
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be led by Dr Liz Lakin\, a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee and the Academic Lead for the Living Lab at Dundee Botanic Garden. \nHealthy soil is essential to produce the fruit\, cereal and vegetables we eat. Soil also stores carbon by locking in greenhouse gases\, helping to reduce our impact on climate change. \nKnowing about soil and what it needs will help you produce bumper crops and vigorous plants. Learning to use natural improvement methods will save time and money\, plus you will create a healthy habitat for thousands of different species of fungi\, bacteria and invertebrates that in turn support and maintain your soil. \nAt the workshop we will learn about the different types of soil\, why the chemistry of soil is important and do some testing. We’ll also discuss ways to improve your soil and give an overview of the important elements of a healthy soil. \n* To get the best from the workshop please bring along a soil sample from your own garden or an area you use for growing. Place some soil in a medium sized jar\, about 1/3\, then fill up with water and leave to settle. Ideally\, do this 2 weeks before. SUMMARY:Line in the Sand - Seafield Beach\, Kirkcaldy
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Seafield Beach\, Kirkcaldy to demand climate action at our Line in the Sand event at 12 noon on Friday 24th September. \nLine in the Sand is a Fife-wide\, participatory demonstration of the urgent need for action on the climate emergency and a powerful piece of climate art in the run up to the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow. The date has been chosen to coincide with the Global Climate Strike organised by Fridays for the Future\, and will also take place during Climate Fringe Week. \nAttendees will literally form a line in the sand\, running the length of Seafield Beach\, to show their support for urgent climate action. By forming a Line in the Sand participants will also symbolise climate driven rising sea-levels\, which is an increasing threat to many Fife coastal communities. \n \nLine in the Sand creates a time for reflection and call for local action whilst linking into a Fife wide programme of activities aimed at raising the alarm\, creating a wave of personal action and linking to the Global Climate movement. The event is for anyone who is concerned about the climate emergency and who wants to draw attention to the urgent need for action. \nTake Part\nTo take part in Line in the Sand Kirkcaldy\, arrive at Seafield Beach picnic area between 11:45am -12 noon on 24th September (on foot or bike if possible).  Please carry a placard with a climate message should you wish. SUMMARY:Blue Sky Thinking: Fresh ideas to encourage us to fly less
DESCRIPTION:Flying less is a quick way to significantly reduce your carbon footprint\, but it seems that giving up our regular flight for some overseas sunshine is a difficult ask for many of us – even getting the conversation going is a challenge! \nAt this event\, we will hear from two speakers who have been attempting to do just that\, and who are trying to empower individuals and businesses to change the way we holiday and help us overcome our collective addiction to flying. We will hear about their campaigns\, find out how to get involved and learn from their experiences of encouraging others to reduce their air-travel. \nAnna Hughes\, Director of Flight Free UK\, will be sharing her experiences of encouraging individuals to stay grounded for a year by signing their flight free pledge. The organisation began life in February 2019 inspired by the Swedish Flygfritt (flight free) movement\, which asks people to stay grounded for a year in order to reduce their carbon footprint\, re-discover the joys of overland travel\, and begin to shift the social norm away from aviation. \nOur second speaker\, Emma Kemp\, is Campaigns Manager for Possible\, who work across the UK supporting people and groups to do bold\, beautiful things to tackle climate change. She will be sharing the story of their Climate Perks initiative\, which supports climate-conscious employers to offer paid ‘journey days’ to staff who travel on holiday by train\, coach or boat instead of flying – empowering them to act on their values. \nWe will finish with a group discussion on flight reduction\, how to encourage behaviour change and will consider what will happen as Covid-19 travel restrictions are lifted. You will also have a chance to put your questions to our speakers. \nBooking Information \nThe event is free but booking is required as places are limited. \nThe event will take place online\, via Zoom. We’ll send out a joining link the day before the event. \nIf you have any problems booking or any questions\, please phone 01592 858458 or email craig@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk \nAbout our speakers \n \nAnna Hughes is Director of Flight Free UK. Anna has worked in the sustainable transport sector since 2008\, mainly focusing on increasing cycling levels with children and families. A lifelong environmentalist\, she made the decision to stop flying ten years ago and hopes the #FlightFree2021 campaign will inspire others to do the same. \n  \n  \nEmma Kemp is Campaigns Manager at Possible\, climate change charity focusing on positive\, practical action. She has 7+ years experience in the sector\, in 2019 was selected as one of the British Science Association’s ‘New Voices’\, and has previously appeared on Channel 4 News and Sky News. She currently heads up Possible’s Climate Perks initiative\, featured in publications including Harper’s Bazaar\, the Guardian\, and the Financial Times. There are a growing number of Climate Perks certified employers based in sectors ranging from food to finance to digital. \n  \nMain Image: Flower photo created by jannoon028 – www.freepik.com
