SUMMARY:Luna the Moongazing Moth
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 23rd November\, a giant\, glow-in-the-dark moth will be fluttering into Kirkcaldy. Celebrate the work of Climate Action Fife with us and have a closer look at our moon through Luna the Moongazing Moth’s telescope. \n\n\n \n\n\nThis five-meter sculpture of a ‘Luna moth’ sits on an electric cargo bike\, with a powerful telescope mounted to her frame. She’s touring the country to promote the work of community projects funded through The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. This fund supports local groups across the UK taking action to tackle climate change.\n\n\n \n\n\nLuna moths use the moon for navigation. Gaze into Luna’s onboard telescope for an awe-inspiring glimpse of the moon’s surface. We hope you will leave the event inspired to help protect the environment and become more active in local environmental projects. \n\n\n \n\n\nLuna is visiting Kirkcaldy Esplanade from 5:30pm – 8:30pm. As well as meeting Luna and taking part in a bit of moongazing\, there will be fun activities for all ages to get involved in. \n\n \nAbout Climate Action Fife\nClimate Action Fife is a project that is bringing together local authority and public sector\, businesses\, third sector\, communities and individuals to work together to make the region a greener and fairer place to live.  \nClimate Action Fife is funded by a £2\,102\,234 grant through The National Lottery Community Fund’s £100 million Climate Action Fund\, which supports community groups tackling climate change and taking action to protect our planet. SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardening - Healthy Soil
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be led by Dr Liz Lakin\, a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee and the Academic Lead for the Living Lab at Dundee Botanic Garden. \nHealthy soil is essential to produce the fruit\, cereal and vegetables we eat. Soil also stores carbon by locking in greenhouse gases\, helping to reduce our impact on climate change. \nKnowing about soil and what it needs will help you produce bumper crops and vigorous plants. Learning to use natural improvement methods will save time and money\, plus you will create a healthy habitat for thousands of different species of fungi\, bacteria and invertebrates that in turn support and maintain your soil. \nAt the workshop we will learn about the different types of soil\, why the chemistry of soil is important and do some testing. We’ll also discuss ways to improve your soil and give an overview of the important elements of a healthy soil. \n* To get the best from the workshop please bring along a soil sample from your own garden or an area you use for growing. Place some soil in a medium sized jar\, about 1/3\, then fill up with water and leave to settle. Ideally\, do this 2 weeks before. \nAbout our tutor\, Dr Liz Lakin: Trained originally as a school biology teacher\, Liz continues her teaching and research in biology and environmental science at Dundee. She has a keen interest in all things to do with plants. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. Drinks will be provided.
