SUMMARY:Together we cycle - Film screening and panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the Together we cycle\, a film looking at the development of cycling culture and infrastructure in the Netherlands and why against all odds\, Dutch people kept on cycling. \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion looking at cycling and Fife\, what is happening to improve cycle infrastructure and what we hope can be achieved in the future. \nPanelists include Councillor Jane Ann Liston and Lucy Jackson\, Sustainability Co-ordinator at Fife College.  \nAbout the film\n\nTogether we cycle – A film by Nieuw & Verbeterd \nThe film Together we cycle investigates the critical events that led to the revival of the Dutch cycling culture. Many people think that cycling in the Netherlands is a natural phenomenon. However\, until the 1970s the development of mobility in the Netherlands followed trends across the globe. The bicycle had had its day\, and the future belonged to the car. The only thing that had to be done was to adapt cities to the influx of cars. \nThen Dutch society took a different turn. Against all odds\, people kept on cycling. \nThere is no easy answer to the question why this happened in the Netherlands. There are many factors\, events and circumstances that worked together\, both socially and policy-wise. In Together we cycle\, key players tell the story of the bumpy road which led to the current state. Where cycling is an obvious choice for most citizens. \nPanel\nLucy Jackson\, Sustainability Co-ordinator\, Fife College\n \nHi\, my name is Lucy. Part of my role involves addressing the barriers that students and staff face commuting to campus\, and promoting/encourage sustainable transport modes. My role actually started off with the Students Association where I was on a one year placement funded by Smarter Choices Smarter Places. I wrote a Transport Strategy and I also managed an e-bike hire scheme where students can borrow an electric bike for £3/week. \nPersonally\, I have always loved cycling as I like to feel the fresh air as I travel at speed\, favourite places include Tentsmuir Forest. The reason why I am passionate about cycling and encouraging others to do the same is because I know how great I feel being on a bike and I believe it is great for mental health and a great way to reduce your environmental impact!  \nCouncillor Jane Ann Liston\nI use the bike for almost all council appointments\, mostly within St Andrews but sometimes all the way to Cupar or to Leuchars for the train and then again from Markinch to Glenrothes. \nWhile cycling for me is a means of transport from A to B rather than a leisure activity\, I do like cycling on the Isle of Arran; in fact\, it was to free myself from the structures of the very limited bus timetable on the island that made me persevere and overcome balance problems in my early 40s to be able to cycle. It’s also a good way to get between Queen Street and Central stations in Glasgow. \nCycling is environmentally friendly and also a way of taking exercise without really trying and which is not redolent of school PE lessons; shortly after I started riding I found I had inadvertently dropped a dress size which was an added bonus. \nWhat is important about providing better infrastructure is that it helps make cycling the easy option\, and that leads more people to choose that transport option. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking bays available outside 8 East Fergus Place. There is a ramp into the building and level access throughout. There is also an accessible toilet. Learn more about how to get to us and the accessibility of the building. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – winter fruit tree pruning and care
DESCRIPTION:Pruning your apple and pear trees in winter encourages growth and creates a more productive fruit tree. Without cutting back\, trees can become congested and produce less fruit.  \nBetween November and March\, the trees are dormant\, and the lack of leaves means you can better see the structure and shape of your tree. You will learn how to maintain established trees\, remove dead and diseased wood and reduce crowded growth increasing the vigour of your tree in spring.  \nWe start with some fruit tree basic knowledge then move on to the orchard for some practical skills.  \nWe are excited to have Andrew Lear\, Appletreeman leading the workshop. Andrew is a highly experienced fruit tree expert with wide-ranging expertise. He puts 40 years of horticultural knowledge into practice by teaching and advising orchard groups and owners throughout Scotland and propagating heritage varieties of fruit. \nTaking place at Greener Kirkcaldy’s community garden and orchard based in Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, this workshop is free as part of Climate Action Fife thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. This practical workshop will be mostly outdoors but with some initial theory inside the onsite cabin. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided\, please feel free to bring your own lunch. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather \nGardening gloves are recommended\, please bring a pair with you. Equipment and tools will be provided. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event will usually take place in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways\, let us know if you would have issues getting the the orchard area as we can adapt the workshop to take place in a more accessible area.

The switch-on takes place shortly after this event at 4pm on the High Street\, just a five-minute walk from our building. \nAbout the film\nEmperor penguins are born to sing. SUMMARY:Fife Climate Knowhow (full day)
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the climate emergency is a vital component in reducing carbon emissions\, and will become an increasingly important factor in keeping the workforce employable. Scotland’s employees will need to be appropriately skilled to address both the climate emergency and changes to working practices that Scotland’s businesses and public and third sector employers will need to adopt going forward. \nThe Fife Climate Knowhow training is delivered by the Climate Action Fife project which brings together individuals\, communities\, local government\, and businesses to tackle the climate emergency and make Fife a greener and fairer place to live. \nIn the morning session participants do a ‘Climate Fresk’. Here\, the participants work as a team to find the cause and effect relationships between 42 climate cards: using the cards to build a collage that explains climate change. \nThe afternoon the session focusses on impacts in Scotland\, adaptation and action\, and how to talk about climate change. \nParticipants will find out: \n\nWhat are the major contributors to climate change\nThe impacts of the climate emergency on quality of life\, safety and health globally\, nationally and in Fife\nWhat we can do collectively to change the way we work and live to tackle the climate emergency\n\nPart of the session will include personal climate literacy accreditation\, awarded to individuals by the Carbon Literacy Project. This personal accreditation will become increasingly important to workforces in the future\, and helps organisations on the way to achieving accreditation as a Carbon Literate Organisation. \nBooking Information\nThis event is free but booking is required. \nAccessibility Information\nThere is accessible parking at the venue and the building is wheelchair accessible. This is a private car park so please talk to reception about getting a parking pass when you arrive or you can park at Kirkcaldy Rail Station nearby.
