SUMMARY:Film screening: Together We Grow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening and chat in our community building as part of the Community Land Festival. \nWe are screening Together We Grow by Happen Films. The film follows a community organisation based in New Zealand called Common Unity. Plus a repair cafe\, a sewing workshop\, garden sharing\, and a honey-making enterprise? \nCommon Unity! A truly wonderful example of the importance of the community in tackling issues like social isolation and food insecurity. And in building the social connections and social relationships so important to health and life. \nIn Together We Grow we get to know a group of community members doing the important work of caring for others and building community resilience. It’s a community hub of learning\, support\, creativity\, joy\, sharing and shared interest\, all in one place. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – Understanding Soil (soil workshop 1)

SUMMARY:Coastal Connections - Climate Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the Beach of Dreams sculptures on display at Ravenscraig Walled Gardens – and have your say on Fife coastlines and beaches. \nAs Fife hosts the Beach of Dreams\, a UK-wide coastal arts festival exploring the unique heritage\, cultures\, and futures of our coastlines in the face of the climate emergency – come and join us for ‘Coastal Connections – Climate Conversations’. \nAlongside this Creative Programme\, Fifers are invited to make their local Climate Commitments\, that will become part of a national sculpture\, showcasing the power of community. \nThese are simple\, actionable commitments that people\, groups\, or organisations can make to take care of the coastlines and respond to the climate crisis. These pledges can be as big or small as you desire\, from individual actions to communitywide efforts. \nThis event is twinned with the walk and cycle events on the same day\, this event takes place after the walk and cycle so participants are very welcome to join. Refreshments will be served in the cabin\, all are very welcome. \nThis is a drop-in event. No booking required. \nThis event is part of a series of events taking place along Fife Coastal Path from 17th – 24th May for Beach of Dreams with Fife Coast & Countryside Trust. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \nDirections\nRavenscraig Walled Gardens on Google Maps \nYou can also follow the instructions below. \nThe gates to the garden are located at the Dysart end of Ravenscraig Park\, on the corner of Dysart Road and West Quality Street. You will see the opening into Ravenscraig Park. Just next to this are two green metal gates beside a red brick wall and a sign ‘Ravenscraig Walled Garden’ – this is the entrance to our garden. \nOnce you find your way to the gate\, go through the green gates and follow the path around to your right past the car park. Keep to the right and you will see a big space with lots of allotments. If you look to the left\, you will see a green ‘cabin’ with a polytunnel and raised beds. That is our base for the event.

SUMMARY:Fife Climate Knowhow
DESCRIPTION:Our Fife Climate Knowhow course demystifies all you need to know about the climate emergency! In one full day\, we will look at the science\, causes and impacts; and consider how climate change is affecting us in Fife. We will discuss individual and community climate action and work out how to challenge the climate silence. \nAt the end of our course\, you will have an awareness of the carbon impact and cost of everyday activities. You will also be able to reduce your own those of your community or organisation. No previous climate change knowledge is required\, this is a shared learning experience!\nOur course meets the Carbon Literacy Project Standard. This means that you can gain Carbon Literate accreditation (and a certificate) by completing a short assessment. \nThe day starts with Climate Fresk\, a fun and engaging way to discover the facts and complexities of Climate Change through a team-based card game. Participants use cards to build up a collage that explains climate change in a creative and visual way making it ideal for those who prefer more active and visual learning. \nThe course covers the following: \n\nClimate Science & Justice\nCauses & Impacts\nAdaptation & Action\nCommunicating Climate Change\n\nPlease let us know of any support you may need to be able to take part in this course. \n\nWho should attend?\nThis session is open to partners who are aware of the need to upskill the workforce to prepare for forthcoming changes in the employability landscape to meet and manage response to the climate emergency. \nPart of the session will include personal climate literacy accreditation\, awarded to individuals by the Carbon Literacy Project. This personal accreditation will become increasingly important to workforces in the future\, and helps organisations on the way to achieving accreditation as a Carbon Literate Organisation. \nAccessibility\nThis event is wheelchair friendly and there is accessible parking at the venue.

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens - Introduction to Forest Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Forest gardens are food producing systems which mimic natural woodland\, supporting biodiversity whilst providing an abundant harvest. You don’t need any big trees to get started though! Even small gardens or allotment plots can become food forests. \nThis interactive session will introduce the key ideas behind forest gardening\, and how you can apply them in your own growing space. We will use the garden at Ravenscraig as a live example to look at how the principles can be applied. \nJanice Gibson is a keen gardener with an interest in permaculture. She designed and implemented the forest garden at PLANT in Tayport\, and helps to maintain it. \nThis workshop should be of interest to all gardeners\, from the more seasoned to absolute beginners! \nWe will provide tea/coffee and biscuits\, but there also will be the chance to try homemade herb teas and fruit leathers. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\n\nThere are disabled parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event will usually take place in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways\, let us know if you would have issues getting to the orchard area as we can adapt the workshop to take place in a more accessible area.

SUMMARY:Together we cycle - Film screening and panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the Together we cycle\, a film looking at the development of cycling culture and infrastructure in the Netherlands and why against all odds\, Dutch people kept on cycling. \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion looking at cycling and Fife\, what is happening to improve cycle infrastructure and what we hope can be achieved in the future. \nPanelists include Councillor Jane Ann Liston and Lucy Jackson\, Sustainability Co-ordinator at Fife College.  \nAbout the film\n\nTogether we cycle – A film by Nieuw & Verbeterd \nThe film Together we cycle investigates the critical events that led to the revival of the Dutch cycling culture. Many people think that cycling in the Netherlands is a natural phenomenon. However\, until the 1970s the development of mobility in the Netherlands followed trends across the globe. The bicycle had had its day\, and the future belonged to the car. The only thing that had to be done was to adapt cities to the influx of cars. \nThen Dutch society took a different turn. Against all odds\, people kept on cycling. \nThere is no easy answer to the question why this happened in the Netherlands. There are many factors\, events and circumstances that worked together\, both socially and policy-wise. In Together we cycle\, key players tell the story of the bumpy road which led to the current state. Where cycling is an obvious choice for most citizens. \nPanel\nLucy Jackson\, Sustainability Co-ordinator\, Fife College\n \nHi\, my name is Lucy. Part of my role involves addressing the barriers that students and staff face commuting to campus\, and promoting/encourage sustainable transport modes. My role actually started off with the Students Association where I was on a one year placement funded by Smarter Choices Smarter Places. I wrote a Transport Strategy and I also managed an e-bike hire scheme where students can borrow an electric bike for £3/week. \nPersonally\, I have always loved cycling as I like to feel the fresh air as I travel at speed\, favourite places include Tentsmuir Forest. The reason why I am passionate about cycling and encouraging others to do the same is because I know how great I feel being on a bike and I believe it is great for mental health and a great way to reduce your environmental impact!  \nCouncillor Jane Ann Liston\nI use the bike for almost all council appointments\, mostly within St Andrews but sometimes all the way to Cupar or to Leuchars for the train and then again from Markinch to Glenrothes. \nWhile cycling for me is a means of transport from A to B rather than a leisure activity\, I do like cycling on the Isle of Arran; in fact\, it was to free myself from the structures of the very limited bus timetable on the island that made me persevere and overcome balance problems in my early 40s to be able to cycle. It’s also a good way to get between Queen Street and Central stations in Glasgow. \nCycling is environmentally friendly and also a way of taking exercise without really trying and which is not redolent of school PE lessons; shortly after I started riding I found I had inadvertently dropped a dress size which was an added bonus. \nWhat is important about providing better infrastructure is that it helps make cycling the easy option\, and that leads more people to choose that transport option. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. There is a ramp into the building and level access throughout. There is also an accessible toilet. Learn more about how to get to us and the accessibility of the building. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – winter fruit tree pruning and care
DESCRIPTION:Pruning your apple and pear trees in winter encourages growth and creates a more productive fruit tree. Without cutting back\, trees can become congested and produce less fruit.  \nBetween November and March\, the trees are dormant\, and the lack of leaves means you can better see the structure and shape of your tree. You will learn how to maintain established trees\, remove dead and diseased wood and reduce crowded growth increasing the vigour of your tree in spring.  \nWe start with some fruit tree basic knowledge then move on to the orchard for some practical skills.  \nWe are excited to have Andrew Lear\, Appletreeman leading the workshop. Andrew is a highly experienced fruit tree expert with wide-ranging expertise. He puts 40 years of horticultural knowledge into practice by teaching and advising orchard groups and owners throughout Scotland and propagating heritage varieties of fruit. \nTaking place at Greener Kirkcaldy’s community garden and orchard based in Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, this workshop is free as part of Climate Action Fife thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. This practical workshop will be mostly outdoors but with some initial theory inside the onsite cabin. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided\, please feel free to bring your own lunch. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather \nGardening gloves are recommended\, please bring a pair with you. Equipment and tools will be provided. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events.
