SUMMARY:Waterfront Walkabout - Evening session
DESCRIPTION:Come along and help develop ideas for greener\, more welcoming spaces along Kirkcaldy’s Waterfront. \nAt these interactive events\, we’ll work together to explore how green and public spaces along the Waterfront could be improved and used differently – creating places that work better for the people who live in\, work in and visit Kirkcaldy. \nWe’ll build on what people have already told us through earlier conversations and consultation events. We’ll bring along some initial ideas and visuals to get the conversation started\, but nothing is set in stone. We want to hear your ideas\, local knowledge and what you think would make the Waterfront greener\, more attractive and a better place to spend time. \nWe’ll take a closer look at four spaces: \n\nBasin car park\nEsplanade car park A\nThe raised platform opposite Volunteers Green\nThe area opposite the leisure centre\n\nThere will also be plenty of opportunity to think about the Waterfront more widely and share ideas for other spaces\, connections and improvements along the area. \nYou don’t need any previous knowledge or experience to take part – just come along with your ideas\, experiences and knowledge of Kirkcaldy. \nWe’re running a daytime and an evening session to give people a choice. Both will follow the same format\, so come along to whichever suits you best. We’ll be holding more events in different locations across Kirkcaldy over the autumn too. \nA community greenspace strategy for Kirkcaldy\nThese events are part of a wider project to create a community Greenspace Strategy for Kirkcaldy. We want to work with people across the town to identify how Kirkcaldy’s green and public spaces could be improved\, better connected and used in ways that benefit our communities. We’re starting with the Waterfront\, but this is just the beginning. We’ll be holding more events in different locations across Kirkcaldy over the next few months\, with opportunities to talk about green spaces in other parts of the town and help develop ideas for them too. \nBooking Information\nThis event is free and booking is encouraged to help us get an idea of numbers. You can also drop in to the event on the day. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Any information you choose to share about your background is managed separately to information that you give us to process your booking (for example\, your name). \nIf you are having trouble booking you can call 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk for assistance. \nAccessibility\nThe event is taking place outdoors\, so please come dressed for the weather. We will walk along the Waterfront at a leisurely pace. The Prom is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens - Introduction to Forest Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Forest gardens are food producing systems which mimic natural woodland\, supporting biodiversity whilst providing an abundant harvest. You don’t need any big trees to get started though\, even small gardens or allotment plots can become food forests! \nThis interactive session will introduce the key ideas behind forest gardening and how you can apply them in your own growing space. We will use the community training garden at Ravenscraig Walled Garden as a live example to look at how the principles can be applied. \nJanice Gibson is a keen gardener with an interest in permaculture. She designed and implemented the forest garden at PLANT (People Learning about Nature in Tayport)\, and helps to maintain it. \nThis workshop should be of interest to all gardeners\, from the more seasoned to absolute beginners! \nWe will provide tea/coffee\, biscuits\, some homegrown herbal teas and fruity snacks. Participants should bring a packed lunch as there are no shops nearby. \n\nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nHow to get here \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Family-friendly litter-picking at Seafield
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a family‑friendly coastal ramble and litter‑picking walk from Kirkcaldy to Seafield Tower led by Rubbish Rangers. \nTake part in a relaxed coastal litter‑picking walk designed for families\, children\, and anyone who loves being outdoors. Together\, we’ll explore a stretch of the Fife Coastal Path\, enjoy time in nature\, look out for local wildlife (including the local Seafield seals)\, and help keep our coastline clean. From toddlers to teens and adults\, everyone can join in and make a positive difference. \nThis event is planned with kids in mind\, so the pace of the walk and litter-picking will be adjusted to little participants. Seafield Tower will be the end point where participants can rest\, enjoy a snack\, and hopefully spot seals relaxing on the rocks\, before returning to the car park. \nThe walk itself is child‑friendly\, but the rocks around the tower and the nearby coastline are very uneven. Children must remain under close adult supervision in this section\, especially if they climb onto the rocks to get a better view of the seals. \nAdditional Information\nPlease note that this event is weather-dependent. In the event of forecast adverse weather\, Greener Kirkcaldy staff will decide whether to go ahead with the walk the day before. We will contact attendees via phone and email if the walk cannot go ahead. \nDress for the outdoors – wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Bringing water and light snacks for young kids is advised as well. As this event is organised with children in mind\, dogs are not permitted. \nLitter pickers\, high‑vis vests for kids\, bin bags\, and children’s gardening gloves will be provided. Disposable gloves will be available for adult participants\, but you’re welcome to bring your own gardening gloves if you prefer. \nBooking Instructions\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nAccessibility information\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. The area covered during the event will be mostly flat\, with one or two slightly steeper sections. This route is accessible for more robust buggies and wheelchairs; lightweight strollers may find some areas challenging \nToilets are available nearby at Morrisons or slightly further at the East Basin Car Park at the end of the prom. \nPlease let us know of any accessibility requirements when booking

SUMMARY:Pick-up a fruit tree at Orchard Blossom Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Climate Action Fife’s A Fruit Tree for Every Garden in Fife campaign. Pick-up a tree to take away and plant at home in your garden. We will have a limited number of trees so please book to avoid disappointment. We will have a mix of apple\, plum and pear trees but we cannot guarantee which ones will be available on the day. \nYou can also join us at the Orchard Blossom Day picnic from 12pm – 3pm. Bring some lunch and a blanket and celebrate Greener Kirkcaldy’s blossoming orchard. \nPlanting a tree in your garden is one of the best ways to cut your garden’s carbon footprint. Plus\, you will have free\, fresh and delicious fruit in years to come. Fruit trees can live for 50-100 years and will provide habitat for wildlife and a beautiful addition to your garden. \nOur staff will be on hand to talk to you about your tree and will make sure you know how to plant it. You can also pick-up a stake\, tree-tie and tree guard to protect your new tree. Leaflets and guidance on how to plant and care for your tree will also be available. \nIf you are able to\, bring a plastic carrier bag or bin liner to take your tree home in. Most of the trees are in pots. You may be given a bare-root tree (not in a pot) if so\, you will need to plant it as soon as possible. If you are given a bare root tree and cannot plant it straight away you will need to have a place to dig it into the soil to keep its roots protected from drying out or frost. \nThis event will take place at Ravenscraig Walled Garden in Kirkcaldy. \nPlease do not book to collect a tree at more than one event or if you received a tree from us in a previous year. \nBooking Information\nThis event is free but booking is required. Donations are welcome to support the Climate Action Fife Community Tree Fund. \nIf you have any trouble booking\, please get in touch with us by calling 01592 458 858 or email social@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk \nAccessibility Information\nThere are accessible parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. SUMMARY:Film screening: Together We Grow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening and chat in our community building as part of the Community Land Festival. \nWe are screening Together We Grow by Happen Films. The film follows a community organisation based in New Zealand called Common Unity. Despite being on the other side of the world their values and work reflect what we are trying to do right here in Kirkcaldy and can inspire us in future projects. \nAfter the screening there will be time for discussion and chat about the themes of the films. \nWe will be providing light snacks and refreshments. \nAbout the film \nWhat do you get when you combine a community cafe\, a community grocer and a community bike works? Plus a repair cafe\, a sewing workshop\, garden sharing\, and a honey-making enterprise? \nCommon Unity! A truly wonderful example of the importance of the community in tackling issues like social isolation and food insecurity. And in building the social connections and social relationships so important to health and life. \nIn Together We Grow we get to know a group of community members doing the important work of caring for others and building community resilience. It’s a community hub of learning\, support\, creativity\, joy\, sharing and shared interest\, all in one place. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking bays available outside 8 East Fergus Place. There is a ramp into the building and level access throughout. There is also an accessible toilet. Learn more about how to get to us and the accessibility of the building. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – Understanding Soil (soil workshop 1)
DESCRIPTION:Workshop 1 – Understanding Soil \nLook after your soil and you have the foundation of a flourishing garden! Taught by expert Dr Liz Lakin\, this workshop will help you to understand your soil better\, through soil testing\, as well as how to improve its structure\, drainage and nutrient levels using natural solutions. \nHealthy soil is a key part of a climate friendly garden. Soil can slow climate change by storing carbon\, which is the main component of organic matter. \nTo get the most out of this session we will ask you to bring along a small sample of soil from your own garden or growing space. Further instructions will be sent after sign up. \nThis course is suitable for beginner or more experienced gardeners. We will have a break for tea and coffee during the session. \nWhilst these two workshops are designed to complement each other\, you can choose to attend just one as a standalone session \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. SUMMARY:Fife Climate Knowhow
DESCRIPTION:Our Fife Climate Knowhow course demystifies all you need to know about the climate emergency! In one full day\, we will look at the science\, causes and impacts; and consider how climate change is affecting us in Fife. We will discuss individual and community climate action and work out how to challenge the climate silence. \nAt the end of our course\, you will have an awareness of the carbon impact and cost of everyday activities. You will also be able to reduce your own those of your community or organisation. No previous climate change knowledge is required\, this is a shared learning experience!\nOur course meets the Carbon Literacy Project Standard. This means that you can gain Carbon Literate accreditation (and a certificate) by completing a short assessment. \nThe day starts with Climate Fresk\, a fun and engaging way to discover the facts and complexities of Climate Change through a team-based card game. Participants use cards to build up a collage that explains climate change in a creative and visual way making it ideal for those who prefer more active and visual learning. \nThe course covers the following: \n\nClimate Science & Justice\nCauses & Impacts\nAdaptation & Action\nCommunicating Climate Change\n\nPlease let us know of any support you may need to be able to take part in this course. \n\nWho should attend?\nThis session is open to partners who are aware of the need to upskill the workforce to prepare for forthcoming changes in the employability landscape to meet and manage response to the climate emergency. \nPart of the session will include personal climate literacy accreditation\, awarded to individuals by the Carbon Literacy Project. This personal accreditation will become increasingly important to workforces in the future\, and helps organisations on the way to achieving accreditation as a Carbon Literate Organisation. \nAccessibility\nThis event is wheelchair friendly and there is accessible parking at the venue.

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens - Introduction to Forest Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Forest gardens are food producing systems which mimic natural woodland\, supporting biodiversity whilst providing an abundant harvest. You don’t need any big trees to get started though! Even small gardens or allotment plots can become food forests. \nThis interactive session will introduce the key ideas behind forest gardening\, and how you can apply them in your own growing space. We will use the garden at Ravenscraig as a live example to look at how the principles can be applied. \nJanice Gibson is a keen gardener with an interest in permaculture. She designed and implemented the forest garden at PLANT in Tayport\, and helps to maintain it. \nThis workshop should be of interest to all gardeners\, from the more seasoned to absolute beginners! \nWe will provide tea/coffee and biscuits\, but there also will be the chance to try homemade herb teas and fruit leathers. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nAccessibility\n\nThere are disabled parking spaces on site. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event will usually take place in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways\, let us know if you would have issues getting to the orchard area as we can adapt the workshop to take place in a more accessible area.

SUMMARY:Together we cycle - Film screening and panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the Together we cycle\, a film looking at the development of cycling culture and infrastructure in the Netherlands and why against all odds\, Dutch people kept on cycling. \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion looking at cycling and Fife\, what is happening to improve cycle infrastructure and what we hope can be achieved in the future. \nPanelists include Councillor Jane Ann Liston and Lucy Jackson\, Sustainability Co-ordinator at Fife College.  \nAbout the film\n\nTogether we cycle – A film by Nieuw & Verbeterd \nThe film Together we cycle investigates the critical events that led to the revival of the Dutch cycling culture. Many people think that cycling in the Netherlands is a natural phenomenon. However\, until the 1970s the development of mobility in the Netherlands followed trends across the globe. The bicycle had had its day\, and the future belonged to the car. The only thing that had to be done was to adapt cities to the influx of cars. \nThen Dutch society took a different turn. Against all odds\, people kept on cycling. \nThere is no easy answer to the question why this happened in the Netherlands. There are many factors\, events and circumstances that worked together\, both socially and policy-wise. In Together we cycle\, key players tell the story of the bumpy road which led to the current state. Where cycling is an obvious choice for most citizens. \nPanel\nLucy Jackson\, Sustainability Co-ordinator\, Fife College\n \nHi\, my name is Lucy. Part of my role involves addressing the barriers that students and staff face commuting to campus\, and promoting/encourage sustainable transport modes. My role actually started off with the Students Association where I was on a one year placement funded by Smarter Choices Smarter Places. I wrote a Transport Strategy and I also managed an e-bike hire scheme where students can borrow an electric bike for £3/week. \nPersonally\, I have always loved cycling as I like to feel the fresh air as I travel at speed\, favourite places include Tentsmuir Forest. The reason why I am passionate about cycling and encouraging others to do the same is because I know how great I feel being on a bike and I believe it is great for mental health and a great way to reduce your environmental impact!  \nCouncillor Jane Ann Liston\nI use the bike for almost all council appointments\, mostly within St Andrews but sometimes all the way to Cupar or to Leuchars for the train and then again from Markinch to Glenrothes. \nWhile cycling for me is a means of transport from A to B rather than a leisure activity\, I do like cycling on the Isle of Arran; in fact\, it was to free myself from the structures of the very limited bus timetable on the island that made me persevere and overcome balance problems in my early 40s to be able to cycle. It’s also a good way to get between Queen Street and Central stations in Glasgow. \nCycling is environmentally friendly and also a way of taking exercise without really trying and which is not redolent of school PE lessons; shortly after I started riding I found I had inadvertently dropped a dress size which was an added bonus. \nWhat is important about providing better infrastructure is that it helps make cycling the easy option\, and that leads more people to choose that transport option. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nAccessibility\nThere are accessible parking bays available outside 8 East Fergus Place. There is a ramp into the building and level access throughout. There is also an accessible toilet. Learn more about how to get to us and the accessibility of the building. \nIf you have any other accessibility questions or would like the resources at the event to be in large print please phone 01592 858458 or email info@greenerkirkcaldy.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:Climate Friendly Gardens – winter fruit tree pruning and care
DESCRIPTION:Pruning your apple and pear trees in winter encourages growth and creates a more productive fruit tree. Without cutting back\, trees can become congested and produce less fruit.  \nBetween November and March\, the trees are dormant\, and the lack of leaves means you can better see the structure and shape of your tree. You will learn how to maintain established trees\, remove dead and diseased wood and reduce crowded growth increasing the vigour of your tree in spring.  \nWe start with some fruit tree basic knowledge then move on to the orchard for some practical skills.  \nWe are excited to have Andrew Lear\, Appletreeman leading the workshop. Andrew is a highly experienced fruit tree expert with wide-ranging expertise. He puts 40 years of horticultural knowledge into practice by teaching and advising orchard groups and owners throughout Scotland and propagating heritage varieties of fruit. \nTaking place at Greener Kirkcaldy’s community garden and orchard based in Ravenscraig Walled Garden\, this workshop is free as part of Climate Action Fife thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. \nThis event is suitable for beginners. This practical workshop will be mostly outdoors but with some initial theory inside the onsite cabin. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided\, please feel free to bring your own lunch. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather \nGardening gloves are recommended\, please bring a pair with you. Equipment and tools will be provided. \nBooking Information\nThe event is free but booking is required. You can choose to purchase a ticket with a donation. Donations help us do more work in our community. \nOur booking form includes a series of optional anonymous questions. These help us learn more about the people we reach through our events. Please note the terrain is mostly flat and the paths are gravel. The venue is outdoors with the exception of the working cabin. \nThis event will usually take place in the orchard area of our gardens which is not recommended for wheelchairs due to steep access and narrow and uneven pathways\, let us know if you would have issues getting the the orchard area as we can adapt the workshop to take place in a more accessible area.
